Tyler Perry says Mea Culpa grew out of his love of older thrillers from the 1980s and 1990s. He framed the film as a chance to explore “the best and worst of humanity” through the genre of an exotic thriller. He did not name a single earlier movie as the source, so the inspiration is best understood as a genre influence rather than a specific remake or homage.
What Perry said about the idea
The clearest statement comes from Perry’s interview with Netflix Tudum, written by Erin Corbett and published February 26, 2024. Perry told Tudum: “This idea came to me because I love all of those older thrillers from the ’80s and ’90s.” He continued: “It was fun to explore the best and worst of humanity through the genre of an exotic thriller.”
Those two remarks are the core of his inspiration account. They explain the mood he was reaching for and the kind of storytelling he wanted to revisit, not the plot mechanics or a particular scene.
Genre influence, not a single source film
Perry’s comments point to a family of films rather than one title. The Tudum interview does not name a movie that served as the template for Mea Culpa, and no other official source reviewed for this article does either. Readers looking for a “this film is based on” answer will not find one in Perry’s own words.

In practical terms, that means:
- The idea is attributed to affection for 1980s and 1990s thrillers in general.
- The film’s emotional register is tied to Perry’s stated interest in exploring morally complicated people.
- Any comparison to a specific earlier movie is the commentator’s, not Perry’s or Netflix’s.
Perry also made a similar point in appearances promoting the film. Tyler Perry Entertainment’s page on his appearances on The Today Show and The Tonight Show ahead of the film’s February 2024 premiere on Netflix notes that he discussed his love of thrillers and the making of the film. That page confirms the theme but does not add a named source film.
The premise the inspiration feeds into
Netflix’s original February 23, 2023 announcement, published by About Netflix, described criminal defense attorney Mea Harper taking the murder case of an artist, with the hope of making partner at her firm. The artist’s guilt is left unresolved from the start. Netflix’s official Media Center synopsis later describes Mea’s attempt to determine whether Zyair Malloy is innocent or guilty, and its wording emphasizes the uncertainty about his guilt and the risks of the attraction between the two characters.

How the title is classified
The headline calls Mea Culpa a mystery thriller. That is a descriptive phrase, not Netflix’s formal label. Netflix’s Media Center places the film in the thriller and drama categories. The distinction matters less for the inspiration question than for search and catalogue browsing, where the Netflix category is the one to use.

Where to watch and what to check
Netflix Tudum reported in February 2024 that the film was streaming on Netflix. Streaming availability can change over time and can vary by country, so the Netflix title page in your region is the reliable check. As of this article’s publication in October 2026, the premiere itself is more than two years old, which is why the headline’s “new” should be read as the 2024 release.
What the sources do not establish
The official interview, Netflix’s film listing, and the 2023 announcement do not provide viewing figures, budget numbers, or rankings for Mea Culpa, and none of these sources identify a named film that directly inspired it. Any article that offers such a figure or a source-film claim is going beyond the available evidence.

Perry’s own description remains the authoritative account: a debt to older thrillers, a wish to explore the best and worst of people, and a genre-driven story built around a lawyer who cannot be sure of her client’s innocence.
