What Inspired The Fifth Element? The Film’s Place in Sci-Fi History

The Fifth Element (1997) draws on recognizable science-fiction traditions without reducing to a single source: French comic art helped shape its visual language, while miniatures, computer-generated imagery and digital matte paintings brought its exuberant future to the screen. Luc Besson described it as his wildest project and a film made for pure entertainment.

What inspired The Fifth Element?

The film’s design team included French comic artists Jean “Moebius” Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières, alongside production designer Dan Weil. Visual-effects supervisor Mark Stetson told American Cinematographer that the look was heavily influenced by 1970s French comic books. That connection helps explain the film’s boldly graphic cityscapes, imaginative vehicles and exaggerated silhouettes; it does not mean the film has one sole origin or simply copies a comic.

Stetson also contrasted the setting with the darker urban futurism associated with Blade Runner, describing flying cars and broad daylight in a future he found different from that film’s Los Angeles. This is a useful comparison of visual outlook, not a claim that The Fifth Element is wholly utopian or that one film defines science fiction. Its mix of adventure, action, comedy and fantasy gives the city a distinctive, playful energy.

Besson’s account of the project points to a long gestation, though it does not establish a precise script timeline. In a statement reproduced by Unifrance, he said: “I started writing a novel when I was 16. I didn’t think about turning it into a movie until much later. In fact, it came to me little by little. “The Fifth Element” is certainly the movie of mine that is the furthest from reality : it was my wildest project, I wanted to make a film that was pure entertainment.”

  • Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in acclaimed director Luc Besson's outrageous sci-fi adventure, an extravagantly styled tale of good against evil set in an unbelievable twenty-third century world.

How were the effects made?

The screen world was built through a hybrid effects approach rather than a single technique. The film’s production feature in American Cinematographer describes miniatures, computer-generated vehicles and digital matte paintings among the methods used to create the future city and its flying traffic.

The same publication reported that approximately 85 model makers and 85 artists were working at any one time on finishing more than 220 effects shots. Those figures describe concurrent work as reported in the article, not the production’s total crew or a final count of all effects shots. The feature first appeared in the May 1997 issue and was published on the magazine’s website on December 18, 2019.

Who designed the costumes?

Jean-Paul Gaultier designed the costumes. In a 2017 Vogue interview, Gaultier recalled that Besson wanted Leeloo to be a redhead and described her costume as a last-minute creation. Milla Jovovich recalled that wearing it made stunt work physically challenging. The interview also recounts the costume’s continuing association with the character in fashion and fan contexts; that is participant recollection and reporting, not a measured claim about popularity.

What is the story, and who made the film?

Directed by Luc Besson and produced by Gaumont, The Fifth Element is set in the 23rd century. Its story follows Korben Dallas and Leeloo as they work to summon the Fifth Element and stop a threat to Earth. Gaumont’s catalog describes the element as uniting air, water, fire and earth.

What awards did The Fifth Element win?

The Festival de Cannes records the film as its 1997 opening film, screened out of competition. Unifrance records three César wins in 1998:

  • Best Director: Luc Besson
  • Best Production Design: Dan Weil
  • Best Cinematography: Thierry Arbogast

Gaumont also lists those three César categories. These records establish the wins in those categories; they should not be extended to other awards.

How long is The Fifth Element?

The official records give different runtimes: the Festival de Cannes catalog lists 122 minutes, while Gaumont’s catalog lists 126 minutes. Neither record explains the discrepancy, so there is no single runtime to state without qualification.
