Kelly Clarkson says “Where Have You Been” began with a moment in Only Murders in the Building: Martin Short’s Oliver Putnam looks at Meryl Streep’s character and asks, “Where have you been?” Clarkson was struck not just by the words, but by the awe in Short’s expression—and imagined a happy song about finding a love she had thought might not exist.
The scene that sparked the song
Clarkson described the inspiration on her SiriusXM channel. As SiriusXM reported her account, she said: “I’ve rarely done something like this, but I was watching ‘Only Murders in the Building’ — it’s Martin Short’s face. He says to Meryl Streep’s character in the show, ‘Where have you been?’”
The detail she emphasized was Short’s face and delivery. The scene gave her an emotional image to build from: someone meeting a person who feels astonishingly right, as if they had been waiting for them.
What Clarkson said the song means
Clarkson characterized the song as happy, describing its feeling this way: “Because the song is happy. It’s like you found something that you thought was almost basically a unicorn and did not exist.” In her account, the line becomes a joyful expression of finding a rare, long-awaited love—not simply a reference to a memorable piece of dialogue.

What the account does—and does not—establish
SiriusXM identifies the scene as one from Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, involving Short’s Oliver Putnam and Streep’s character. Its report does not identify the season or episode, so the specific scene cannot be pinned down from that account alone.
