Ice Cube called AI “demonic” during a May 2023 interview on the Full Send podcast, criticizing AI-generated music and voices that imitate artists. He argued that listeners want authentic performances and said an artist’s voice should not be replicated without permission or payment. His comments addressed music and performer identity—not every use of artificial intelligence—and were his opinion, not a legal ruling.

What did Ice Cube say?

In the Full Send interview, Ice Cube was discussing contemporary rap, Auto-Tune and computerized performers when he said, “I think AI is demonic.” He also predicted that listeners would resist artificial music: “I think there’s gonna be a backlash because of A.I. I think people are gonna want things organic and not artificial.” Fox News reported the remarks on May 24, 2023; The FADER covered the interview on May 22, 2023.

In context, “demonic” was his forceful description of AI-made music and voice imitation. The reporting does not establish that he was condemning all AI applications or offering a technical assessment of the technology.

Why was he objecting to AI-generated music?

Coverage linked Cube’s comments to “Heart on My Sleeve,” a track described as using AI-generated vocals that imitated Drake and The Weeknd. The example helps explain the concern: a generated performance can sound like a recognizable artist even though that artist did not record it. The FADER reported that Cube objected to the track and said Drake should sue its creator.

Cube’s broader point was about authenticity and control. He said he expected audiences to want artists’ real voices rather than artificial imitations. That is his prediction and view; the cited reports do not establish how listeners generally feel.

How did he distinguish sampling from voice imitation?

Cube’s comparison drew on hip-hop’s history of sampling. As Fortune reported, he argued that a sample can be approved or denied by the owners of the song, while using a deceased artist’s voice to make a new song without approval is different. The Independent reported his view that a person’s original voice should not be manipulated without payment.

This is Cube’s distinction, not a statement of how copyright or other laws treat every sample or AI-generated voice. The analogy centers on permission and control; it does not prove that the two practices have identical legal rules.

Did Ice Cube sue anyone over an AI version of his voice?

The FADER and The Independent reported that Cube said he would sue people involved if an AI-generated version of his voice were made or distributed. That was a stated threat, not evidence that he filed a lawsuit, that a court considered the issue, or that any particular legal claim would succeed.

What the “demonic” remark does—and does not—mean

  • It was said in a music context: Cube was discussing AI-generated performances and the imitation of artists’ voices.
  • It expressed his opinion: the word “demonic” was his characterization, not a factual or legal finding.
  • His concern included permission: he objected to voices being copied without approval or payment.
  • It was not a claim about every AI use: the reporting ties his comments to music and performer authenticity.
