Jennette McCurdy has described the children’s television environment she worked in as “undeniably toxic,” and said aspects of it were “undeniably abusive.” In the interview cited here, she does not say Dan Schneider’s name herself. She refers to a showrunner as “The Creator,” and press coverage of her memoir identifies that figure as Schneider. Keeping McCurdy’s own words separate from the interviewer’s framing and from journalists’ identification is the key to describing this accurately.
What McCurdy said about the work environment
The clearest on-record statement comes from her 2023 appearance on The Louis Theroux Podcast. Theroux asked about “the creator” of the shows McCurdy starred in and about allegations concerning that person. McCurdy answered:
“I will say the environment that I was in for making children’s television shows was undeniably toxic and aspects of it were undeniably abusive.”
She went on to say that she had not recognised how serious the problem was at the time: “And then afterward, I really realized how unhealthy it was.” The episode is available through a third-party transcript, so readers who need exact punctuation should check the episode audio before reproducing these lines word for word.

Who “The Creator” refers to, and how each source attributes it
Four layers of attribution appear in the coverage, and they should not be collapsed into one claim. McCurdy’s own term is “The Creator.” Theroux is the person who says Schneider’s name in the 2023 exchange. Journalists then connect the term to Schneider in their reporting.
| Source | Date | What it establishes | Name used for the figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Louis Theroux Podcast (third-party transcript) | 2023 | Theroux introduces the question about “the creator”; McCurdy’s answer describes the environment as toxic and abusive | Theroux says “Dan Schneider”; McCurdy says “the creator” |
| PBS Amanpour & Company interview | 2022 | Discusses McCurdy’s use of “The Creator” and her account of emotional abuse | “The Creator” |
| The Guardian memoir coverage | 2022 | Says McCurdy wrote about the man she called “The Creator” and describes him as understood to be Schneider | “The Creator,” identified by the paper as Schneider |
| Vanity Fair memoir coverage | 2022 | Reports that the memoir refers to an allegedly abusive boss as “The Creator” | “The Creator” |
In practice, this means you can attribute the phrase “The Creator” to McCurdy and her memoir, and attribute the Schneider identification to press reporting. The name “Dan Schneider” appears in the 2023 podcast as Theroux’s question, not as McCurdy’s answer. None of the sources reviewed for this article presents McCurdy directly naming Schneider in these passages, and the descriptions of his conduct are her account and the reporting on it, not findings.

Her account of emotional abuse and the reported offer
In a 2022 PBS interview, McCurdy discussed her account of emotional abuse by the creator figure. She also described Nickelodeon offering “hundreds of thousands of dollars” for her silence, which she said she did not accept. That is her account as presented in the interview. The sources reviewed do not independently establish the terms of any agreement or offer, and the figure should be attributed to her and to the interview rather than presented as a verified amount.
Where to read her account in full
Her memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, is the primary source for the material discussed above. The publisher’s listing is the most reliable reference for the title and author, and it is the place to start if you want her account in her own words rather than in excerpts or summaries. You do not need the book to follow the interview answers quoted here, but it is the only complete version of her description of “The Creator.”
