Since The Middle ended, Charlie McDermott’s best-documented work falls into two areas. The first is acting: he played Ty in three episodes of the 2019 miniseries Unbelievable and Scott in the 2019 film Countdown. The second is music: he released his debut album, Some Things Just Fall Out of Your Hands, in 2020, and in a November 2024 interview he described a first tour for that record. Film listings for 2026 and 2027 name projects without a role for him, so those should not be reported as confirmed work.
Where his career stood after The Middle
The Middle is the reference point for this question. McDermott played Axl Heck through the show’s ninth and final season, which the filmography places in 2018. Everything below comes after that run.
Post-series acting credits
Two screen credits from 2019 are documented in the filmography sources consulted for this article. Both are listed with his character names, and neither listing gives a production date beyond the year.
Unbelievable (2019 miniseries)
McDermott plays Ty in three episodes of the miniseries. It is his most serious dramatic credit listed after the sitcom, and it moved him from a long-running family comedy role into a supporting part in a crime drama.

Countdown (2019 film)
The filmography lists him as Scott in Countdown. The sources consulted do not add a plot summary or box-office data for the film, so this article does not describe his role beyond the name.
Music: debut album and first tour
McDermott’s clearest post-Middle project in his own name is music. His debut album, Some Things Just Fall Out of Your Hands, was released in 2020.

The 2024 SNACK interview
In an interview with Carlin Braun for SNACK published in November 2024, McDermott discussed the album and said he was embarking on his first tour since releasing it. That is a report of his plans at the time of the interview. It does not establish that he is touring now or has released music since. He described music as personally expressive and tied the opportunity to make it to the production shutdowns and strikes that affected film and television work. Treat that as his own account, not a full explanation of his career decisions.
He put the shift this way: “I really missed making something that was me, and not just attaching myself to other things.” The surrounding discussion concerns his move toward music and his wish to make work that comes from him directly.

Film listings for 2026 and 2027
AlloCiné lists Petunia for 2026 and Vivien & The Florist for 2027. Neither listing gives a role for McDermott, and neither confirms whether the film has been released. Do not describe his involvement in either title unless a production company, distributor or official announcement names him. Because it is now October 2026, a 2026 release date should be checked against current release information before it is treated as past.
