Deleting Facebook starts a timed removal process, not an instant wipe. Meta says you can usually cancel the request by logging back in within 30 days, although the window varies by region. Removing everything you posted can take up to 90 days. During that period, your Facebook content is not available to other people on Facebook, but copies may remain in backups, legal records, security systems, or other users’ inboxes. Deletion also ends access to Messenger and Facebook Login, and can affect information and purchases connected to Meta Quest.
What Facebook deletion actually does
A permanent-deletion request tells Meta to remove the account and information added to it. Meta says that includes your profile, photos, posts, videos and other account content. Once the process is complete, that material cannot be retrieved through the account.
The request is processed in stages. Meta describes a cancellation period, a removal period and exceptions for copies that cannot be immediately erased. The result is different from pressing a single “delete” button and watching every record disappear at once.
The 30-day cancellation period
Meta says you can cancel the deletion by logging in within 30 days. It also notes that the cancellation period varies by region, so 30 days should be treated as the standard described in its help guidance rather than a universal guarantee. Logging in during the applicable window can stop the deletion process.

Up to 90 days to remove posted content
Meta says it may take up to 90 days from the beginning of the deletion process to delete all the things you have posted. While removal is underway, Meta says the content is not accessible to other people using Facebook. The 90-day figure is a maximum process estimate for posted material, not a promise that every technical copy has already vanished at that point.
Copies can survive the 90-day period
Meta says copies may remain in backup storage after the main deletion period. Those backups are used for disaster recovery, software errors and other data-loss events. Meta also says it may retain information for legal issues, enforcement of its terms, or efforts to prevent harm. Its public guidance does not specify one final expiration date for every backup or list every category covered by each exception.
What is deleted and what may remain
The most useful distinction is between material attached to your account and copies or records held somewhere else. Deleting your account targets the former; it cannot automatically erase another person’s copy or every operational record created while the account existed.

| Data or copy | What Meta’s guidance says | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Profile, photos, posts and videos added to your account | Meta says these are permanently deleted after processing. | You should not expect to recover them once the deletion is complete. |
| Messages sent to friends | Copies may remain in the recipients’ inboxes. | Deleting your account does not remove a message copy that another person already received. |
| Backup copies | Copies may remain after 90 days for disaster, software-error or data-loss recovery. | The main account can be gone while protected backup systems still hold copies for an unspecified period. |
| Log records and similar database entries | Some copies may remain but be disassociated from personal identifiers. | A technical record can persist without continuing to be linked to your profile in the ordinary way. |
| Information retained for legal, terms or safety reasons | Meta says it may keep information for these purposes. | Deletion does not override every legal, enforcement or harm-prevention obligation. |
Why messages are a special case
When you send a message, the recipient can receive a copy in their inbox. Removing your account does not give you control over that inbox. A friend may still be able to read the conversation even though your profile and other account content are being deleted. The existence of a surviving message copy does not mean your entire account deletion failed; it reflects that the message was stored in more than one place.

Meta uses permanent deletion to describe the account content it says it will remove, not an assurance that every byte ever associated with you is instantly destroyed. Backup retention, disassociated logs and legally retained information are separate from the visible profile and posts targeted by the deletion request.
How long the process takes
- Before you submit the request: download information you want to keep. Meta recommends saving items such as photos and posts because account-added content cannot be retrieved after deletion.
- When deletion begins: the account enters the cancellation period. Meta describes up to 30 days, with regional variation.
- During the cancellation window: logging in may cancel the request. If you do nothing, Meta continues processing the deletion.
- During removal: Meta says deleting all posted content can take up to 90 days from the start. The material is not accessible to other people using Facebook while removal is underway.
- After the main removal: backups and certain records can remain. Meta does not publish one universal date by which every backup copy must be gone.
The clock starts when the deletion process begins, not necessarily when you first decide that you want to leave. If you need a specific photograph, post or account record, save it before submitting the request rather than relying on the 90-day period.

How to permanently delete a Facebook account
Meta’s current help guidance places the control in Accounts Centre. Labels can change by device, app version or region, so use the following path as a guide and follow the prompts shown on your screen.
- Open Facebook and select Settings and privacy.
- Open Settings.
- In Accounts Centre, choose Personal details.
- Select Account ownership and control.
- Choose Deactivation or deletion.
- Select the Facebook account or profile you want to change.
- Choose Delete account, continue through the confirmation screens and enter any requested password or reason.
Check the selected profile carefully if more than one account or profile appears. Submitting the request starts the cancellation and removal process described above. Do not log in during the applicable cancellation period unless you intend to cancel the request.
Deletion versus deactivation
Deactivation is the reversible option. Deletion is the permanent option after its cancellation period and processing. Choosing between them depends on whether you want a temporary break or want to give up the account and its content.

| Question | Deactivation | Deletion |
|---|---|---|
| Can you return to the account? | Yes. Meta describes deactivation as reversible and says the account can be reactivated. | Only during the applicable cancellation window; after processing, account-added content cannot be recovered. |
| What happens to photos, posts and videos? | They are not deleted. | Meta says they are permanently deleted after processing. |
| Is the profile visible? | Meta says the profile is hidden from other people. | The account and its targeted content are removed as the process completes. |
| What about Messenger and Facebook Login? | Deactivation is the temporary route if you may need to keep using the account later. | Deletion ends access to Messenger and Facebook Login connected to that account. |
| What happens to Meta Quest information? | Deactivation does not represent the permanent deletion described for the account. | Meta says deleting the Facebook account also deletes Meta Quest information, including app purchases and achievements, and can forfeit existing store credits. |
Services and accounts linked to Facebook
Messenger
Meta says you will no longer be able to use Facebook Messenger after deleting the account. Existing copies of messages can still be visible in other people’s inboxes, but you lose the account access used to send and manage them.
Facebook Login
Deleting Facebook also removes your ability to use Facebook Login for other apps and websites registered through Facebook. Those services may still have their own accounts and data, but the Facebook sign-in connection no longer works. Meta warns that you may need to contact each third-party service to recover access.
Meta Quest
If your Meta Quest account information is connected to Facebook, Meta says deletion removes Quest information such as app purchases and achievements. Existing store credits can be forfeited. Treat this as a separate loss of access and purchases, not merely a change to your social profile.

What to do before submitting the request
- Download your information: save photos, posts and any other account material you may need. Meta says added content cannot be retrieved after deletion.
- List Facebook Login connections: identify websites and apps where Facebook is the sign-in method, then create another login method or contact the service before deleting Facebook.
- Check Messenger conversations: assume recipients may retain copies of messages you sent. If a conversation matters, arrange another way to communicate before losing Messenger access.
- Review Meta Quest purchases and credits: deletion can remove Quest information and forfeit store credits according to Meta’s guidance.
- Choose deactivation instead if you are uncertain: deactivation hides the profile while leaving photos, posts and videos undeleted and allowing reactivation.
- Confirm the correct profile: Accounts Centre can display more than one account or profile. Verify the selection before confirming.
Can you get the data back after deleting Facebook?
You can generally stop the request by logging in during the cancellation period Meta provides for your region. That is different from restoring a completed deletion. Meta says information added to the account cannot be retrieved after deletion, so downloading a copy beforehand is the reliable way to preserve it.
A surviving message in a friend’s inbox is also not a recoverable copy of your account. It belongs to the recipient’s side of the conversation. Likewise, a backup or disassociated log retained by Meta is not presented as a user-accessible archive that you can request through the deleted profile.
Why deletion cannot be an instant universal wipe
A social-media account creates several kinds of records: visible profile content, copies delivered to other users, operational logs and protected backups. A deletion workflow can remove the visible account while preserving limited records needed to restore systems, investigate abuse, comply with legal obligations or prevent harm. Meta’s explanation separates those exceptions from the account content it says will be permanently deleted.
That distinction also explains why two people can observe different results. One person may no longer find the deleted profile or posts, while a recipient still sees an old message and Meta’s infrastructure still contains a protected backup copy. Those outcomes are consistent with the stages and exceptions in Meta’s published guidance.

Deleting Facebook removes the account’s profile and user-added content after a cancellation period and a process that can take up to 90 days. It does not guarantee immediate disappearance of messages stored in other people’s inboxes, backup copies, disassociated logs or information retained for legal, terms-enforcement or safety reasons. Download what you need first, separate every Facebook Login connection, check Messenger and Meta Quest consequences, and use deactivation if you want a reversible break rather than permanent removal.
