After the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, floats are dismantled for transport, returned to New Jersey and stored. Some are brought back to Macy’s Moonachie studio for preparation and any needed repairs or touch-ups before going into storage again. The exact route varies: Macy’s executive producer Will Coss confirmed in 2024 that the company uses a separate storage facility and that not every float is kept at the studio.
How floats leave the parade route
A behind-the-scenes account published by Jersey Kids in 2014 describes the practical first step: once a float leaves the route, crews begin dismantling it so it can be transported. The report says the floats were taken back to New Jersey. It offers a detailed snapshot of the process at that time, rather than a guarantee that every float follows an identical sequence today.
Macy’s executive producer Will Coss confirmed in a 2024 interview that the parade uses a separate storage facility and that not all floats and balloons are stored at the studio. He did not identify the facility’s address, give a complete inventory, or lay out the full current transport process. Read Coss’s interview with Parade.
What happens while floats are in storage?
The 2014 Jersey Kids report says returning floats were stored at another facility, then brought to Macy’s Moonachie studio early the following year for parade preparation. Staff made any needed touch-ups to paint, structure, and décor before the floats went back into storage. This is the clearest published description of that preparation cycle, but it is a historical account, not confirmation that every float is handled that way now. See the 2014 behind-the-scenes report.

Floats and balloons are stored differently
The parade’s giant balloons should not be confused with its large vehicle-based floats. In the 2024 interview, Coss said all giant balloons are stored in hampers. He described removing their air, rolling them tightly, and putting them into hampers for transport. His comments establish a balloon-storage method; they do not describe how the floats themselves are packed or stored.
Why some floats return to the parade
Whether a float appears again is a creative and production decision, not an automatic part of a fixed reuse schedule. Coss said the team weighs what will make the best parade, including the creative story, visual effect, and the float’s place in the line of march. Those decisions are made well before the production year, according to his 2024 interview.

A 2014 report quoted Macy’s creative director at the time, John Piper, describing a possible three-year arc for a new float: its debut, a chance for audiences to remember it, and a later return that viewers might anticipate. That account also said some floats came out of retirement and reported that the Tom Turkey float had been built in 1978 and was used yearly at the time. These are historical examples, not a current policy or confirmation of the float’s present-day status.
Macy’s 2025 announcement also showed how the parade can revisit its history: it said selected historic parade elements would return or be reimagined for that year’s event ahead of the 2026 centennial. That announcement concerned the 2025 lineup; it does not establish what happened to any particular float after the parade. Read Macy’s 2025 announcement.

Have any floats been used elsewhere?
Yes, at least according to one historical account. Jersey Kids reported in 2014 that some smaller floats went to Universal Studios Orlando for a seasonal mini-parade that ran daily through January 1. The report documents a past use, not a current arrangement; the available official sources do not confirm that the Orlando practice continues.
