The next figure, $62,000, is an estimate for a gold-and-diamond Guerlain collector piece. Ordinary retail examples sit far below those sums: Chanel reported a $150 launch price for its 31 Le Rouge collection in September 2023.
This ranking compares reported prices, not equivalent products or verified 2023 launches. It includes a custom commission, a collector object, and retail products; the price basis and availability therefore matter as much as the order.
How this ranking works
The list ranks headline prices reported in 2023-era coverage, not products proven to have launched in 2023 or a set of items all available for purchase at the same time. The figures come from secondary editorial reporting, so they should be read with their stated basis and date rather than as current quotes.
In particular, the top prices largely describe custom work or elaborate cases. They do not establish that the lipstick formulas themselves are worth more, perform better, or can be bought at those prices today.

Duke’s Avenue’s June 14, 2023 update and The List’s October 10, 2023 article report a $14 million figure for a one-of-a-kind custom commission. The described lipstick had an 18-karat-gold, diamond-encrusted case, but the reported price was for a wider set that also included mascara. Why a lipstick can carry a collector-level price
These examples involve different things being priced: a custom commission, a precious-metal case, a branded retail product, or a refillable lipstick collection. The reported figures do not isolate the cost or performance of the formula. A higher price can reflect packaging, limited or bespoke production, and brand positioning; it is not evidence by itself that the lipstick wears better.

Chanel’s packaging director, Sylvie Legastelois, described the 31 Le Rouge case as drawing inspiration from an extrait de parfum bottle and the N°5 spray, including its golden ring and characteristic closing sound, in Bougeoir’s report. That offers a concrete example of packaging as part of the product’s luxury proposition, rather than a claim about formula performance. Bougeoir.
Danny Griffin, Kevyn Aucoin Beauty’s vice president of product development, told The List that a higher price point can open up ingredient options unavailable at the lowest price point. He also offered the view that higher-priced lipstick can outperform a drugstore counterpart in many cases.
