Who becomes monarch after King Charles?
The legal term for a monarch’s death is the “demise of the Crown.” The next eligible person in the line of succession succeeds automatically. Prince William is currently first, followed by his children George, Charlotte and Louis, then Prince Harry and his children, according to the House of Commons Library. Succession is governed by legislation as well as descent, so it is more qualified than a simple rule that the eldest child always inherits.
The new sovereign does not wait for a ceremony to become monarch. The Royal Family explains: “A new Sovereign succeeds to the throne as soon as his or her predecessor dies and is proclaimed as soon as possible at an Accession Council in St James’s Palace.” The council and proclamation formally announce the succession; they do not create it. What would Camilla’s title and role be?
A consort is the spouse of a monarch. The Royal Collection Trust explains that a royal consort has no constitutional power by virtue of that role, though the consort supports the sovereign. If the monarch dies, a former queen consort whose husband has died may be called a dowager queen. The term “queen mother” applies when that dowager is also the mother of the new monarch. Queen Elizabeth, consort of George VI and mother of Elizabeth II, is the modern historical example.

Camilla is not Prince William’s mother, so “Queen Mother” would not describe her in this scenario. The general term “dowager queen” may apply, but the available institutional sources do not establish what personal title or style Camilla would choose to use. They also do not settle her future residence, finances, household or schedule of public engagements.
Does Camilla have a role in succession or a regency?
No. Succession determines who becomes sovereign; a regency or appointment as Counsellor of State concerns who may carry out certain royal functions for a living monarch in specified circumstances. Neither arrangement makes Camilla heir to the Crown.

- Regency: Statutory rules provide for a regent if a monarch succeeds before age 18 or becomes permanently incapacitated. The heir is normally regent if eligible, with limits on the functions they may perform.
- Counsellors of State: They may act for a living monarch during temporary incapacity or absence from the United Kingdom. The sovereign’s consort may be appointed, alongside eligible people in the line of succession.
The House of Commons Library’s 2024 briefing says a UK regency had not been required in more than 200 years at that time. That historical context does not alter what happens on a monarch’s death: the heir succeeds immediately.

Accession involves the Privy Council, Cabinet, Parliament, Buckingham Palace and the Church of England. The sequence varies with circumstances; the Commons Library’s account of the 2022 events is an illustration, not a guaranteed timetable for a future accession.
