If a 24/7 sleep-sounds stream loses internet, playback may buffer and then stop, go silent, or show an error once the player runs out of audio stored locally. There is no universal buffer time or guarantee that it will reconnect automatically: the result depends on the app, playback device, and network. A 24/7 label describes intended availability, not protection from an internet outage.
Why an internet outage can interrupt sleep sounds
When sound is delivered as a stream, the connection is part of the playback chain. Sleep Jar says its third-party audio on Amazon Echo is streamed over the internet, so an interruption can affect playback (Sleep Jar). A brief connection problem may first cause buffering; if the player cannot receive more audio, playback can eventually stop or produce an error.
How long playback continues depends on the audio already buffered on the device and the service’s behavior. The available service guidance does not establish a standard buffer duration or a universal automatic-reconnection rule. Do not assume a stream will stop instantly—or that it will resume on its own.
Streaming, downloads, and built-in sounds are different
Streaming audio
A live or on-demand stream that has not been saved for offline playback needs a working connection to deliver more audio. Spotify says content that has not been downloaded is unavailable in offline mode (Spotify Support).

Downloaded audio
Downloaded tracks can provide an alternative when the connection is poor or unavailable, but check the app’s own offline feature and confirm the specific audio is downloaded before bedtime. Sleepiest says its content is streamed and recommends downloading the desired track before playback if the connection may be poor (Sleepiest Help Center). Downloads are app-specific; do not assume that saving audio in one service makes it available through another.
Device-native sounds
A sound machine with sounds built into the device can play independently of an internet stream, subject to its power source and runtime. Hatch describes Rest Go as an unconnected sound machine that requires no app, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth and includes ten built-in sounds. Hatch lists up to 15 hours of battery use depending on usage; that is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent runtime test (Hatch Support).

What to check when playback stops
- Check whether the outage is broader than one app. Try another app or open a web page on the same device. Spotify recommends this check; if other services also fail, the issue may be the internet connection (Spotify Support).
- Restore the connection. If other apps or pages also fail, check Wi-Fi and restart the router if appropriate. If the connection remains unavailable, contact your internet provider.
- Check the audio source. Determine whether you were listening to a stream, an offline download, or sounds built into the device. In the relevant app, verify that the intended track was downloaded and that offline playback is supported.
- Try device-level playback troubleshooting. YouTube Music recommends a strong Wi-Fi or data connection; its general playback guidance also suggests restarting the device and clearing the app cache (YouTube Music Help).
- Separate internet problems from power problems. A router outage and a device losing power are different failures. For local playback, check the device’s power source and documented runtime rather than assuming a battery-powered model will last all night.
Ways to prepare for overnight continuity
Before bedtime
- Identify whether your chosen audio is streamed, downloaded, or stored on the playback device.
- If the app supports offline playback, download the intended audio in advance and confirm it is available offline.
- If uninterrupted local sound matters more than access to a changing streamed catalog, consider a device with built-in sounds and on-device controls. Check its power requirements and stated runtime.
If you use a smart speaker
Distinguish a speaker’s own ambient-sound feature from audio streamed or cast from a separate app. Google documents ambient sounds that can continue for up to 24 hours unless stopped, and a sleep timer duration of up to 24 hours. Those limits apply to the supported Google feature; they do not establish that third-party streamed audio will keep playing without internet (Google Nest Help).
