Test the video through its end-to-start transition in OBS and YouTube’s Live Control Room before going live. Looping prevents playback from simply ending when the file finishes, but it cannot guarantee that every file, computer, or playback path will be free of black frames.
Set up a single video to loop in OBS
- Create a scene: In OBS Studio, make or select the scene you intend to stream.
- Add the file: In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, then browse to and select your video file.
- Enable the repeat setting: In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. OBS defines this setting as whether the file plays again once playback has completed. OBS Media Sources.
- Keep the source visible: Confirm its eye icon is enabled and that it is present in the scene being streamed. Use the preview to check its size and position; if needed, right-click the source and choose Transform > Fit to Screen.
- Distinguish looping from restarting: Restart playback when source becomes active restarts a source when it becomes visible. It does not replace Loop, which repeats the file after it finishes.
- Check the transition: Watch the OBS preview through at least one complete playback and end-to-start transition. Confirm the intended video and audio are present. This is a practical check, not a guarantee against every possible frame drop or black frame.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
For multiple videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than a Media Source. It can play a media playlist and has a Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for this source to work. The single-file Media Source is the simpler choice when you only need one video repeated. See OBS’s source documentation for the source properties.
Send the loop to YouTube Live
- Prepare the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Connect OBS: In OBS streaming settings, enter the server URL and stream key shown for that YouTube stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it publicly. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Start the encoder: Start streaming in OBS and wait for the stream to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- Verify before going live: Confirm the preview shows moving video and the expected audio, then start the broadcast in Live Control Room. Check that the correct scene is being sent.
- Monitor the broadcast: Watch stream health and audio/video quality in Live Control Room, and check the public watch page, including on a mobile device. YouTube recommends testing the setup and monitoring the event; see its live-stream tips.
- Stop cleanly: End the stream in YouTube when applicable and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guide says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream.
Use encoder settings appropriate to your upload connection, and test them before broadcasting. YouTube recommends RTMPS and provides its current guidance in encoder settings. There is no single bitrate or resolution that is right for every connection and production.
Choose the setup that fits your stream
| Setup | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local video repeated | Enable Loop and keep the source visible in the live scene. |
| OBS VLC Video | A sequence of multiple files | Requires VLC installed; offers playlist looping and shuffle controls. |
| Software encoder on a computer | A typical OBS workflow with scene and source control | The computer and upload connection must remain available during the stream. |
| Hardware encoder | An existing dedicated production setup or higher-production needs | A separate hardware path; it is not required for a basic OBS loop. |
YouTube supports encoder workflows and notes that higher-production events may use professional-grade hardware encoders, while its beginner tips say expensive equipment is not needed to get started. See YouTube’s encoder guide and live-stream tips.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Diagnose where the black screen appears
- Black in OBS preview: Confirm the correct file is selected, the source is visible, and the source is in the scene you are viewing. Check its transform and playback position, then confirm Loop is enabled. OBS’s Show nothing when playback ends option can hide a source after it completes; it does not make the file loop. Refer to OBS Media Sources.
- OBS preview works, YouTube preview is blank: Confirm OBS is connected to the intended YouTube stream, and check the current server URL, stream key, encoder connection, and stream health. YouTube notes that if a third-party encoder reports a start error, copying the current stream key into the encoder may be necessary. See encoder setup and live-stream troubleshooting.
- YouTube preview works, but viewers see a blank output: Verify the correct scene is being sent, inspect the public watch page, and check playback on a mobile device. Monitor the live stream rather than relying only on the OBS preview. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend these checks but do not identify one universal cause.
- The blank appears at the loop point: Watch the transition locally in OBS first. Confirm the source is still visible and looping, and check the file’s playback from its end to its beginning. The official documentation explains the loop setting but does not guarantee a seamless transition for every file and system.
- Video is intermittent or stream health is poor: Check the upload connection and encoder settings, and test before going live. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings.
Keep copyright, content and long-stream limits in mind
A looping setup only controls how the encoder plays and sends your file; it does not grant rights to the music, footage, or other material in it. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and review YouTube’s applicable rules before streaming. A loop also does not guarantee that a stream will be archived or rewindable for any duration: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, and its DVR guidance says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours.
