What Happened When WhistlinDiesel Tried to Destroy a Tesla Cybertruck?

WhistlinDiesel’s Cybertruck did not fail during an isolated towing test: its rear struck a concrete culvert first, then the hitch and surrounding structure failed during a later towing attempt. The stunt, Tesla’s material claims, and subsequent recalls require careful separation.

WhistlinDiesel’s Cybertruck durability series is an extreme creator-produced stunt, not a controlled engineering test. In the first episode, the truck’s rear struck a concrete culvert before a towing attempt involving a Ford F-150; the Cybertruck’s hitch and surrounding structure then failed. Because the impact came first, the video cannot establish that an ordinary towing load alone broke an undamaged Cybertruck.

The first Cybertruck durability test

WhistlinDiesel published “Cybertruck Durability Test #1” on August 2, 2024. The video placed a Tesla Cybertruck alongside a Ford F-150 for a series of stunts and durability challenges. The description said the goal was to simulate situations Cybertruck buyers might encounter and that a second episode would follow if Tesla could repair the truck.

That description records the creator’s intent, not a controlled test design. The video did not provide standardized loads, repeatable conditions, instrumentation, or an undamaged control vehicle. It is best understood as high-intensity entertainment that subjects a vehicle to unusually harsh abuse.

Why the hitch failure is easy to misread

The impact happened before towing

In the sequence that attracted the most attention, the Cybertruck’s rear hit a concrete culvert. A towing attempt involving the Ford F-150 came afterward, and the hitch and adjoining frame structure failed during that sequence.

The order matters. Reporting on the video describes the test as extreme and notes the prior rear impact; it does not isolate towing as the cause. The footage therefore shows a damaged truck failing during a later towing maneuver, not a clean laboratory demonstration that a normal tow load breaks Cybertruck hitches.

What the video can and cannot show

  • It can show: the consequences of subjecting this particular truck to a severe impact followed by additional stress.
  • It cannot show: the maximum safe towing capacity of an undamaged Cybertruck, the statistical reliability of its hitch, or how ordinary owners’ trucks will perform.
  • It does not establish: that towing the F-150 by itself caused the structural failure.

The follow-up episode and reported repairs

WhistlinDiesel released a follow-up on January 3, 2025. Its description says the truck from the first test was sent to Tesla for extensive repairs and returned for further testing.

That is the creator’s account. No repair invoice, engineering report, or independent verification of the work is established here, so the description should not be treated as a documented repair history.

What Tesla says about the Cybertruck’s exterior

Tesla markets the Cybertruck’s exterior material as HFS, or “Hard Freaking Stainless.” Tesla says the material is “seven-times stronger and more scratch resistant than typical exterior steel materials.” That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative result from the WhistlinDiesel test.

Tesla also warns that stainless exterior panels can develop superficial pitting and staining. Its collision-repair guidance says welding cannot be performed on Cybertruck stainless-steel components and directs qualified professionals to follow Tesla’s procedures for removing scratches. Those instructions explain why repairs can require specialized methods, but they do not document how the test truck was repaired.

Recalls that should not be confused with the video

Cantrail-panel recall

Tesla’s support information describes a recall for certain model-year 2024 and 2025 Cybertrucks built from November 13, 2023 through February 27, 2025. The stainless cantrail panel may delaminate at its adhesive joint and separate from the vehicle. Tesla says covered assemblies will be replaced without charge.

This recall is a separate documented vehicle issue. The available reporting does not connect it causally to WhistlinDiesel’s stunt. Owners should check eligibility by VIN through Tesla or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, because coverage depends on the individual vehicle.

Later wheel-and-rotor recall

The Associated Press reported on May 8, 2026 that Tesla recalled 173 Cybertrucks from model years 2024–2026 equipped with 18-inch steel wheels. The issue involved rotor cracking that could allow a wheel stud to separate from the wheel hub; the reported remedy was free replacement of specified components.

How to interpret the stunt as a durability story

Durability is not one number

A vehicle can resist scratches, tolerate routine towing, and still suffer major damage from a concentrated impact. The Cybertruck episode combines impacts, repeated abuse, and towing-related forces, so it does not separate those failure modes.

Use controlled evidence for buying decisions

Anyone evaluating a Cybertruck’s real-world durability should look for tests that state the vehicle’s condition, load, speed, surface, measurement method, and repeatability. A single spectacular failure is evidence about that event, not a reliability rate for the entire model.

Bottom line on the WhistlinDiesel Cybertruck test

WhistlinDiesel showed a Cybertruck being pushed through an extreme sequence, with a substantial rear impact preceding the hitch/frame failure during a later towing attempt. The episode is compelling visual evidence of what happened to that abused truck, but it is not proof that ordinary towing alone destroys Cybertrucks, nor an independent validation or refutation of Tesla’s material claims. Tesla’s cantrail and later wheel/rotor recalls are separate matters that owners should verify by VIN.
