Stephen Colbert’s walk-off on The View was a brief comedy bit in 2010, performed in character. His emotional return three years later was to The Colbert Report, after his mother died. The two moments happened on different shows and for very different reasons.
Why did Stephen Colbert walk off The View?
On October 19, 2010, Colbert appeared on The View in character while promoting his “Rally to Keep Fear Alive.” The conversation touched on co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg leaving the set during an earlier appearance by Bill O’Reilly. Colbert joked about that incident; as the hosts began to respond, he announced, “I am leaving right now!” and stomped off.
He returned to the couch seconds later. It was a comic mock storm-off, not a serious departure. Mediaite’s contemporaneous account describes the appearance as in character and the exit as a joke.
Why was Colbert emotional when he returned to television?
On June 19, 2013, Colbert returned to The Colbert Report after a week away following the death of his mother, Lorna Colbert. Contemporary reports said she was 92. His opening remembrance described the home she created for her eleven children and the affection, singing, and dancing she encouraged. He also recalled painful losses in her life, including her brother, her husband, and three sons, and spoke about how family and faith helped her live without bitterness.

Colbert paused as he collected himself and thanked viewers for their thoughts and prayers. He said, “If you watch this show and you also like me, that’s because of my mom.” CBS News reported on the tribute; ABC News also covered his return and tribute. The Los Angeles Times account noted his week away and his thanks to viewers.
How the two moments differ
| Moment | Program and date | Context and tone |
|---|---|---|
| The walk-off | The View, October 19, 2010 | In-character satire: Colbert pretended to storm off, then returned seconds later. |
| The emotional return | The Colbert Report, June 19, 2013 | A personal tribute after a week away following his mother’s death. |
So Colbert did not return emotionally to The View. The apparent connection comes from combining a comic television appearance in 2010 with a separate, personal moment on his own program in 2013.
