Contemporary reports described the episode as following Harvey’s discovery of Richie’s affair with Alexander; Richie later recalled that he and Harvey were separated at the time. The accounts differ, so the allegation and his retrospective explanation should be kept distinct.
What Brenda Harvey did
Harvey, Richie’s first wife, went to Alexander’s apartment after finding Richie there, and a confrontation followed. ABC News’s 2006 retrospective described contemporary reports as alleging that Harvey had uncovered an affair between Richie and Alexander. That is the reported framing of the 1988 episode, not an independently verified account of how Harvey learned about the relationship.
What Lionel Richie later said about their marriage
In his memoir Truly, Richie offered a different piece of context: “What very few people knew was that Brenda and I were separated.” E! News quoted that line in its 2025 coverage of the memoir. Richie’s account is a first-person recollection, rather than independent confirmation of the couple’s status at the time.
As reported by E! and Fox News in 2025, Richie recalled staying at a beach place before going to Alexander’s apartment, where Brenda appeared at the door and the confrontation unfolded. He also said Brenda was the one who left him. In a further memoir recollection quoted by Fox News, he said he learned they were headed for divorce from a British newspaper handed to him on a flight from London. These details come from Richie’s retrospective account.

The police response and public attention
The Guardian reported in 2025 that police were called, Brenda was charged, and the story became front-page news. The available reporting does not establish the complete legal disposition, so it does not support a claim about how any case ultimately ended.
How the marriage ended
Richie and Harvey married in 1975, and a biographical overview says they had divorced by 1993. The episode at Alexander’s apartment became a highly public part of the story, but the accounts should not be merged: contemporary coverage characterized the affair as an allegation, while Richie’s later memoir recollection said he and Harvey were separated.
