X did announce a dedicated television video app—but not as a confirmed 2026 launch. On April 23, 2024, X announced X TV, a TV-focused way to watch videos from the platform. A beta later appeared on selected Google TV, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV devices. However, availability remains dependent on the device, country, app store, and rollout, and X’s current official download documentation does not provide a complete TV compatibility list.
What X actually announced
The announcement came from then-CEO Linda Yaccarino and X’s official account on April 23, 2024—not from Elon Musk personally. Musk’s ownership and broader plans for X help explain the headline, but the public announcement was attributed to Yaccarino and X. Contemporary coverage described X TV as part of the company’s effort to make video and entertainment a larger part of the platform.
X presented the product as a separate, television-oriented experience rather than simply mirroring the phone app on a larger screen. Promoted features included trending-video discovery, AI-powered organization by topic, advanced video search, and the ability to move viewing between a phone and a television, including casting.
Those were announced features, not a guarantee that every current version of X TV still works exactly as originally described. X also did not give a firm release date. The phrase “coming soon” described a product announcement, not an immediate worldwide launch.

What happened after the announcement?
- April 23, 2024: X announced X TV and its planned video-focused features. No firm release date was supplied.
- September 3–4, 2024: X Engineering said a TV beta was appearing in several app stores. Reporting at the time confirmed visibility on Google TV and Amazon Fire TV, while finding no Roku app.
- Later listing evidence: X Corp. has an official X TV listing on Google Play. The retrieved listing showed more than 100,000 downloads, while user reviews mentioned login problems, sluggish controls, black screens, and weak personalization. These reviews are anecdotal and do not establish a measured failure rate.
- August 2026 documentation: X’s official download page documents iPhone, iPad, Android phones, and Android tablets, but not a complete current list of supported television devices.
Where is X TV available?
Do not interpret “smart TV” as one platform. Televisions and streaming devices use different operating systems, including Google TV, Android TV, Fire TV, Roku OS, webOS, and Tizen. An app available on one does not automatically work on the others.

The safest test is to open the official app store on the television or streaming device, search for X TV, and confirm that the developer is X Corp. Check the country and device model as well as the app name. Searching only for the ordinary X app may produce a different result.
How to install X TV on Google TV or Android TV
- Open Google Play on the television or streaming device.
- Search for X TV.
- Confirm that the developer is X Corp.
- Install and open the app.
- Follow the on-screen sign-in instructions. The app may display a QR code or short authentication code that must be completed on a phone or computer.
- Test navigation and video playback before treating the device as fully supported.
Expect sign-in to be required or at least useful for personalized recommendations. The retrieved official material does not clearly establish whether every viewing function works without an account, so anonymous browsing should not be assumed.

What if X TV does not appear?
A missing listing does not necessarily mean the television is defective. Possible explanations include an unsupported operating system, country restrictions, a different device generation, a regional app-store account, a paused rollout, or the app being listed under a different name. Roku also notes that apps can disappear when providers remove them or stop supporting the platform; its explanation is available here.
Do not make APK sideloading the default solution. It can create security, update, compatibility, and account-login problems. If X TV is not in the official store, use the web or mobile app and compatible casting options instead.
If login or playback fails
- Check that the TV and phone have working internet connections.
- Restart the television or streaming device.
- Update both the X TV app and the device software.
- Generate a fresh QR code or login code and complete it promptly.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- Clear app data or reinstall the app if the platform allows it.
- Try signing in to x.com on a phone or computer to confirm that the account works.
- Contact X support if the account works elsewhere but the TV app does not.
User reviews have mentioned short-lived codes, failed authentication, black screens, slow controls, and poorly personalized recommendations. Treat these as reports of possible failure modes, not evidence of how often they occur.

What can you watch?
X TV is best understood as a social-video service, not a conventional streaming catalog. Depending on the account, post, region, and current app behavior, viewers may encounter:

- Short user-uploaded videos;
- Longer uploads and creator programming;
- Live streams;
- News and event clips;
- Videos embedded in posts; and
- Content from creators, publishers, and accounts followed on X.
X’s official mobile documentation says users can upload and watch videos up to three hours long, along with live video. That does not mean every video is indexed or displayed identically in the TV interface. Availability can also change when a post is deleted, an account changes its settings, or rights restrictions apply.
How X TV compares with YouTube and Twitch
X TV’s intended advantage is the connection between video and real-time social context: posts, trends, breaking events, livestreams, and conversations happening around a video. It may appeal to viewers who want live news reactions, creator broadcasts, or video discovered through X rather than through a traditional recommendation catalog.

YouTube remains the more mature choice for broad device support, subscriptions, search, recommendations, and long-form viewing. Twitch is the clearer fit for established live-streaming communities, especially gaming and interactive creator broadcasts. X TV is less predictable in content organization and has less clearly documented television support.
There are also household considerations. X contains user-generated material with varying quality and moderation, so it may require more supervision than a conventional family-oriented streaming service. Signing into a social account on a shared living-room device may also be undesirable for some users.

No—not solely because of the original 2024 announcement. If you already own a compatible Google TV, Android TV, or Fire TV device, checking the official store costs little. But buying new hardware makes sense only if the device also meets your wider streaming needs and the exact X TV listing is visible in your region.

Apple TV owners should distinguish between the standard X app listed for Apple TV and the separate X TV product. Roku owners should check the Roku Channel Store directly. If the native app is unavailable, a phone, tablet, computer, or browser connected to the television may be a more practical solution, although casting can be affected by network isolation, app limitations, unsupported hardware, or content restrictions.
Verdict
X TV is a real product initiative that progressed beyond the April 2024 announcement, but the original headline is now misleading if read as a new or imminent launch. X announced the app in April 2024, later exposed a beta on selected TV platforms, and still does not publish a complete, current device-support matrix in its main documentation.
For viewers, the practical rule is simple: search the official app store on the specific TV or streaming device, verify the developer, and test sign-in and playback before buying hardware or assuming universal compatibility. X TV is potentially useful for live social video and X-native content, but it is not yet a clearly documented replacement for the broader TV ecosystems offered by YouTube or Twitch.
