VerbalizeIt, the human-powered translation app featured on Shark Tank in 2013, was acquired by translation-software company Smartling in 2016. Smartling said it would incorporate VerbalizeIt’s technology, team and customers into its enterprise platform. The available evidence does not confirm whether a separate VerbalizeIt app still operates today.
What was VerbalizeIt?
VerbalizeIt connected people who needed translations with human translators through a mobile app and service. It was not a standalone translation device. Smartling later described the company as providing human-powered translation and localization to businesses.
The company appeared on Shark Tank Season 4, Episode 26, listed as airing May 17, 2013. All Shark Tank Products and Shark Tank Companies list the episode and the service’s history.
Smartling acquired VerbalizeIt in 2016
On May 19, 2016, Smartling announced it had acquired VerbalizeIt. Smartling said the deal would add audio, video and other multimedia translation capabilities to its enterprise translation management platform. The announcement also said the acquisition brought VerbalizeIt’s technology, people and hundreds of customers to Smartling.

Smartling said co-founders Ryan Frankel and Kunal Sarda would take leadership roles: Frankel focused on channel and partnership alliances, and Sarda on product experience for customers and translators. Those were the roles announced at the time; the announcement does not establish their later employment status. Smartling’s acquisition announcement is the primary source for the deal and its stated purpose.
What happened to the Shark Tank deal?
Secondary accounts do not agree on which Shark made an offer or whether the founders accepted it after filming. One account says they declined after the show was taped, while other update pages give conflicting investor and outcome details. Without a corroborating primary account, the precise televised deal terms should be treated as unresolved—not as a settled explanation of the company’s later fate.

The acquisition by Smartling in 2016 is established separately from those disputed deal details. The available source record does not establish a reliable acquisition price, audited revenue, download count or verified post-show investment amount.

The available evidence does not confirm whether a separate VerbalizeIt app still operates. Secondary company-update pages conflict: one reports continued operation, while others say the company shut down. Smartling’s 2016 announcement documents an acquisition and planned integration, but it is not a current app-store listing or a statement about the app’s present availability.
