She was a Canadian novelist and journalist whose 2005 nonfiction book about Reena Virk’s murder inspired the 2024 television adaptation. The series’ depiction of Godfrey helping investigate the crime is dramatized: in real life, she researched the case as a writer after the killing.
Who was Rebecca Godfrey?
Godfrey was a Canadian novelist and journalist, born in 1967. She earned an MFA from Sarah Lawrence College and taught writing at Columbia University. Her book Under the Bridge received the British Columbia Award for Canadian Nonfiction and the Arthur Ellis Award for Excellence in Crime Writing, according to Columbia University’s School of the Arts.
She also wrote the novel The Torn Skirt, a finalist for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Her final novel, Peggy, is described by her publisher as a fictionalized account of Peggy Guggenheim’s coming of age. Simon & Schuster’s author biography says Godfrey lived with her husband and daughter in upstate New York.
When and how did Rebecca Godfrey die?

Was the real Rebecca Godfrey involved in the Reena Virk investigation?
Godfrey was not a police investigator. Reena Virk, a fourteen-year-old, was murdered in Saanich, British Columbia, in 1997. Godfrey later researched the case for her nonfiction book, interviewing accused people and attending court, according to TIME’s 2024 explainer.
The Hulu limited series gives Godfrey a more active investigative role than the real writer had. Its scenes should be understood as part of a dramatization, not as evidence that Godfrey participated in the original police inquiry. TIME also cautions, in effect, that a screen character’s personal-story elements should not automatically be treated as verified biography; the available biographical sources establish her writing, teaching, family context, and death, but not every personal storyline shown.
