Elena Delle Donne publicly acknowledged that she was gay and engaged to Amanda Clifton in August 2016. She described refusing to hide a major part of her life, while making clear that being open did not mean putting her relationship on display for constant scrutiny. Five years later, that balance—visibility on her own terms—was central to the retrospective framing of her story.
What Delle Donne said when she came out
On August 3, 2016, ESPN reported that Delle Donne had revealed she was gay and engaged to Clifton as part of an upcoming Vogue profile. Delle Donne explained that Clifton was such an important part of her life that omitting her would not have made sense. “I decided I’m not at all going to hide anything,” she told ESPN.
She paired that openness with a clear limit: “I don’t plan on having our relationship out in the public and all this media on it.” The distinction matters. Delle Donne was choosing not to conceal her relationship, not inviting unlimited attention to it. ESPN’s 2016 report records both parts of her statement.
Marriage, confidence and finding her voice
A 2018 Washington Post profile said Delle Donne married Clifton in November 2017, after four years of dating. The profile connected that milestone with a growing ease in her public identity. “I’m married. I’m very comfortable in my own skin, and when I see something that’s wrong, I feel like I need to speak out about it,” she said.

The profile also described her community involvement and her advocacy for visibility in the WNBA. Her comments show how personal confidence and public voice could be related for her, without suggesting that every athlete—or every LGBTQ person—should choose the same degree of visibility. The Washington Post’s 2018 profile offers that later perspective.
What the five-year retrospective adds
The 2021 People retrospective’s title framed Delle Donne’s reflections as coming five years after her public disclosure. The available syndicated listing establishes that retrospective framing, but not additional interview details or quotations. A later, accessible Washington Post account provides another documented point of context: in 2025, it reported that Delle Donne had worried about how sponsors might react to the Vogue profile, and that Nike embraced the disclosure, as did fans. Those are reported responses in her case, not a guarantee of how sponsors or audiences respond to other athletes.

In that 2025 retrospective, Delle Donne’s concise reflection was: “The truth is always better.” Read alongside her 2016 privacy boundary, the line describes candor as her choice without making privacy incompatible with living openly. The Washington Post’s 2025 retrospective recounts the sponsor concern and response.

Delle Donne is no longer an active WNBA player. The league says she retired after 10 seasons and would serve as a special advisor to Monumental Basketball, separating the end of her playing career from her continuing connection to the game. Its retirement announcement also notes two MVP awards, a 2019 championship and her place as the first WNBA player to reach the 50-40-90 club in 2019—a milestone the league says still stands.
