The image followed her March 8, 2025 arrest after two speeding stops in Georgia. In a March 21 interview with PEOPLE, Stewart described where she was headed and how she viewed the sudden online attention; news reports citing a Georgia State Police account supplied details of the stops.
What happened before Lily Stewart’s mugshot went viral?
Stewart was 20 and a University of Georgia sophomore when she was arrested on March 8, 2025. She told PEOPLE she was driving to a fraternity day party at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville and did not want to leave new acquaintances waiting. She recalled the sunroof open, music playing, and then noticing a patrol car.
Her recollection of the speed differs from the figures attributed to the police account. Stewart told PEOPLE she remembered going 85 mph in a 55-mph area. Fox News, citing a Georgia State Police report, and WSB-TV reported that the trooper clocked her at 79 mph in a 55-mph zone during the first stop, issued a citation, then stopped her again roughly two minutes later. The second reported measurement was 84 mph in the same 55-mph zone, while she was driving a 2021 Volvo XC40. WSB-TV placed the first stop on SR 24 in Morgan County.
Why was Lily Stewart arrested?
According to the incident-report account described by Fox News, the trooper considered arrest necessary to mitigate an immediate danger on the roadway. WSB-TV reproduced the unnamed Georgia State Patrol trooper’s statement: “I confirmed her speed at 84 mph in a 55-mph zone.” That is the officer’s stated safety rationale as reported in the press, not a finding of guilt.

There are two reported descriptions of how the second speeding episode happened. The police-account version says a second stop followed the first citation. WSB-TV, quoting Stewart’s comments to the New York Post, reported that she said she accidentally began speeding again after the first stop and realized it only when the trooper pulled her over. Those accounts come from different sources; the available reporting does not resolve the difference.
WSB-TV reported that Stewart faced a $1,000 fine. The sources reviewed do not establish whether a fine was imposed or paid, or the final disposition of the March 8 case.

Why did Lily Stewart smile in her mugshot?
Stewart said the smile was not planned for the booking photo. “Everyone’s been asking me, ‘Why’d you smile, why’d you smile?’ I just smile. It was just like an instinct,” she told PEOPLE. The viral image was a booking photo following an arrest, not a staged glamour portrait.
How did Stewart react to the online attention?
Stewart told PEOPLE she found the response funny: “I think it’s hilarious. I don’t know what all the hype is about. I just took a mugshot and went on with my day.” WSB-TV reported that she posted selected comments to TikTok, including jokes comparing her to a beauty queen. The reports describe a burst of online reaction; they do not establish a formal career launch or endorsement.

What was reported about a later arrest?
Inside Edition reported on March 24, 2025, that Stewart had been arrested again and faced charges of loitering, prowling, and obstructing a law-enforcement officer. That report does not establish the outcome of those charges. The sources cited here do not provide final dispositions for either matter.
