What Happened to the Pontiac Firebird from The Rockford Files?

The Rockford Files showed Jim Rockford in a gold Firebird presented as an Esprit. Secondary accounts identify the production cars as modified Formulas and trace their model years through 1978—but do not establish where they went afterward.

Jim Rockford’s familiar gold car was a Pontiac Firebird presented on screen as an Esprit. Secondary accounts say the show’s cars were actually Formula models modified to look like Esprits, and that the production used Firebirds from the 1974 through 1978 model years. The available sources describe the cars used during filming, but do not establish where any particular car ended up afterward.

What kind of Firebird did Jim Rockford drive?

The car viewers knew was a gold Pontiac Firebird Esprit. Esprit was a genuine Firebird trim designation: Pontiac’s 1974 Firebird brochure includes it in that year’s model range.

That period brochure establishes that the Esprit name was real; it does not identify the cars supplied to the production. Two secondary show-vehicle accounts say the cars used on the series were Formula models altered to present the less overtly performance-oriented appearance of an Esprit. The careful distinction is that Rockford’s car was presented as an Esprit, while its reported production basis was a modified Formula.

Why do Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am get confused?

They refer to different things in accounts of the car. Esprit is the trim viewers saw, Formula is the model that secondary accounts identify as the basis for the production cars, and Trans Am is a separate Firebird name that is sometimes mistakenly applied to Rockford’s car.

Label How it relates to Rockford’s car Evidence
Esprit The trim appearance presented on screen; also a real Firebird designation in Pontiac’s 1974 range. Pontiac’s 1974 brochure establishes the designation. Secondary show-vehicle accounts describe the screen presentation.
Formula The reported basis of the production cars, modified to resemble Esprits. Secondary show-vehicle accounts; no primary production record confirming the specific cars’ original trim was located.
Trans Am A different Firebird name, not the settled identification of Rockford’s car. The available accounts support describing the car as presented as an Esprit and reportedly based on a Formula, not as a Trans Am.

Which model years appeared on the series?

Secondary accounts describe a sequence of Firebirds from the 1974 through 1978 model years. They say the production kept using the 1978 model into the sixth and final season instead of switching to the 1979 Firebird.

Those accounts attribute the decision to James Garner’s reported dislike of the redesigned 1979 front end. This is a reported explanation, not a verified direct quotation from Garner.

What happened to the cars after filming?

The accounts establish details about the cars used on the show, not the fate of a specific vehicle. They do not identify surviving examples, present owners, or current locations. Without that evidence, it would be misleading to say that one particular Rockford Firebird survives—or that none do.
