Seth McDale dies after a car crash while he and Angie are rushing to the hospital as she goes into labor. He gets her inside, then collapses from internal bleeding. Angie gives birth to their daughter, Edith, known as Edie—a moment of joy paired with an immediate, devastating loss.
What happens to Seth in “Be of Service”?
The twist takes place in “Be of Service,” the Season 4 finale. ABC’s official synopsis sets up Angie’s urgent trip to the hospital but does not reveal the outcome. The death and birth details come from TVLine’s post-finale account of the aired episode.
On the way to the hospital, Angie goes into labor and the couple is involved in a car crash. Seth initially appears to make it through and manages to get Angie to the hospital. He then collapses from internal bleeding and dies. Angie gives birth to Edie.
Why the twist changes Angie’s story
The finale pairs Edie’s arrival with Seth’s death. Angie becomes a mother while grieving her husband, giving her a new family responsibility at the same time that her life is abruptly altered by loss. Calling the turn a “game-changer” is an interpretation of that change, not a confirmed prediction about what Angie will do next.

The loss follows Amanda Wagner’s death earlier in the season. In TV Insider’s post-finale coverage, the co-showrunners discuss the implications for Season 5; the story also describes a time jump and altered office dynamics. Those shifts point to a changed workplace and relationships, but they do not establish how Angie’s grief will develop or what will happen in her personal relationships.
What the finale confirms—and what it leaves open
- Confirmed: Seth dies after the crash, and Angie gives birth to Edie.
- Set up for Season 5: The story moves forward across a time jump, with changes in office dynamics.
- Not established: The available post-finale reporting does not confirm a reunion between Angie and Will or Seth’s return.
Before the finale aired, TV Insider reported that co-showrunner Karine Rosenthal had promised a “sense of hope” by the end. That pre-air comment should not be read as a promise of a happy ending: Seth’s death is part of the finale’s outcome.
