Sony later said the television project was not developing creatively as hoped and that it was rethinking the adaptation as a film.
What happened to the Horizon Zero Dawn series on Netflix?
The series was announced in 2022, with Steve Blackman—then known for showrunning Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy—attached to lead it. In July 2024, GameSpot relayed Rolling Stone’s report that the project was “no longer moving forward.” The report did not establish whether it might continue without Blackman or whether it was entirely dead, and Netflix declined to comment to Rolling Stone. So the careful description is that the series was reported as no longer moving forward at Netflix, not that Netflix issued a formal cancellation announcement. GameSpot’s report

Why did Sony rethink the television adaptation?
In April 2025, GameSpot reported that PlayStation Productions chief Asad Qizilbash attributed the change to a creative mismatch: the TV project “just wasn’t creatively going how we wanted to.” He said Sony reassessed the adaptation as a movie. Is a Horizon Zero Dawn movie happening?
In January 2025, TheWrap reported that Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions were developing a Horizon Zero Dawn feature film. The project was described as being in early development, with no release timeframe stated. That report did not confirm a completed film, cast, director, production date, or release date. What was known about the planned Netflix series?
When the adaptation was announced in May 2022, Blackman was attached as showrunner. What’s on Netflix reported that no director or cast members were publicly known to be attached. In remarks from Blackman’s 2022 interview reproduced by the outlet, he identified Aloy as a main character in the planned series. Sony’s 2024 Pictures Segment investor presentation also listed Horizon Zero Dawn in a PlayStation Productions and Netflix context; that confirms the publicly announced association at that point, but not that the series remained active after the July 2024 report.
