Michael Wray won the first U.S. season of Hell’s Kitchen. Later reports describe a difficult period involving painkiller addiction and the death of his infant daughter, followed by efforts to rebuild his life and return to culinary work. Those accounts offer a partial, dated picture—not a verified update on where he is today.
Who won the first U.S. season of Hell’s Kitchen?
Michael Wray won the first U.S. season. Dexerto reported in 2023 that he was 27 when he won. The age is reported by that outlet, rather than independently established here. (Dexerto, November 1, 2023)
What career did Wray pursue after the show?
Winning the competition appeared to open a path to work with Gordon Ramsay in London. Dexerto reported that Wray initially agreed to that opportunity, then changed course and took a head-chef position at The Standard Hotel in Los Angeles. Showbiz Cheat Sheet also reported that he declined the London offer and became a culinary instructor for Sur La Table. These accounts describe particular career steps, not a complete employment record.
Later coverage says Wray created the knife company Skull and Cleavers and taught cooking classes. The available reports do not establish that he opened or owned a restaurant, nor do they confirm whether the company or classes are active now. (Showbiz Cheat Sheet; Parade)

What hardships did later reports describe?
Retrospectives describe Wray’s struggle with addiction to painkillers and the loss of his infant daughter. The available accounts do not establish the medical circumstances surrounding her death, its precise chronology, or a cause. They also do not support attributing these hardships to his television appearance or win.
Parade reproduced a statement Wray wrote for a 2018 fundraiser, making clear that the words came from his post rather than from an interview conducted by the outlet: “I know I was given an amazing opportunity with winning Hell’s Kitchen. I could have done better but I was dealing with a wicked addiction to painkillers and it forced my hand with dealing in life’s hard choices. Not an excuse. Just a fact,” (Parade)

His statement acknowledges both the opportunity and the effect he says addiction had on his choices. It is his own account, not a full explanation of every event in his life. Showbiz Cheat Sheet also summarizes reports connecting addiction and the loss of his daughter; that secondary coverage does not establish additional medical or causal details. (Showbiz Cheat Sheet)

Parade’s retrospective describes several dated snapshots: Wray created a fundraiser in September 2018; a BBC report from 2020, as recounted by Parade, discussed his remarriage and plans to raise money for a food truck; and Parade pointed to Instagram posts from 2024 indicating work aboard a sportfishing boat and an appearance in a Vice TV series. Dexerto reported in 2023 that he was in recovery at that time. These details should be read as reports about those periods, not as confirmation of his present circumstances.

The most accurate answer to “Where is he now?” is therefore that later reporting documents parts of his work and life through 2024, but does not establish his status today.
