Maggie Bell was not written out of FBI. She took a medical leave in an earlier season, returned to work, and CBS’s Season 8 episode listings still place her on the team. The confusion usually comes from two separate storylines: the leave and return, and the Season 8 episode “Forgiven,” in which her sister Erin is kidnapped.

The earlier medical leave was temporary

Maggie’s first absence from the series was a medical leave, and the show brought her back. CBS’s Season 4 episode guide describes her return from that leave, which establishes that the absence was not a permanent exit. The Season 5 guide repeats the same arc: Maggie returns from medical leave to investigate two homicides.

The episode descriptions do not explain why the leave happened. If you are looking for the reason behind the absence, the official summaries do not supply it.

Season 8: Erin’s kidnapping in “Forgiven”

The second storyline is the one most viewers mean when they ask what happened to Maggie. In Season 8, episode 14, “Forgiven,” CBS’s synopsis says Erin goes missing and is kidnapped by a sinister figure from Maggie’s past. Maggie has to find and save her. The episode aired on March 16, according to CBS’s Season 8 guide.

The synopsis sets up the rescue premise but does not describe how the situation ends. Anything beyond that premise, including Erin’s condition afterward and how Maggie is affected, is not established by the official episode material and should not be taken from fan summaries.

Maggie remains in the Season 8 cases

Maggie does not vanish after “Forgiven.” CBS’s Season 8 guide lists her in later episodes, including episode 18, “Behavior,” where she brings in Peter Olsen to help profile a suspect. The guide’s air dates for the episodes around “Forgiven” are March 16 for “Forgiven,” March 23 for “Crusader,” and March 30, 2026 for “3 Up, 3 Down” (episode 16).
