Michael Jordan’s father, James R. Jordan Sr., was shot and killed in July 1993. His body was found in a South Carolina creek on August 3 and identified on August 13. Two men were convicted in the case, though one has continued to dispute the prosecution’s account.
What happened to James Jordan?
James R. Jordan Sr. disappeared in July 1993 after traveling in North Carolina. Contemporary reporting said he had last been seen after attending a friend’s funeral in Wilmington on July 22. His body was found in a South Carolina creek on August 3. On August 5, his red Lexus was found stripped in a wooded area near Fayetteville, North Carolina. Authorities identified the body as Jordan on August 13 and reported that he had died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. Contemporary reporting documented the disappearance, recovery, and identification.
Who was convicted, and what did the prosecution say?
In 1996, Daniel Andre Green and Larry Martin Demery were convicted in the killing. According to WRAL’s account of the trial and later case challenges, Demery testified that the men tried to rob Jordan while he slept in his car, that Green fired the fatal shot, and that Demery helped dispose of the body. Both men received life sentences.
What remains disputed about the case?
Green’s account
Green has maintained that he was not present when Jordan was killed. His account, as reported by WRAL, is that he came upon the scene later and helped dispose of the body. That differs from Demery’s testimony identifying Green as the shooter.

Later challenges and the verdict
WRAL has reported later claims and challenges involving forensic evidence, witness accounts, and Green’s legal representation. Its reporting also describes aspects of the prosecution’s evidence as inconclusive, including ballistics comparison involving a gun recovered at Green’s home and blood analysis in the car. These reported disputes are not proof of innocence or guilt beyond the convictions; they also do not mean the convictions were overturned.
The same reporting says theories involving organized crime and gambling were never proven as factors in the murder. They should not be treated as an established motive.

How did James Jordan’s death affect Michael Jordan?
Michael Jordan announced his retirement from basketball just before the 1993–94 training camp and played baseball in 1994, pursuing a dream inspired by his father. The NBA’s retrospective on Jordan’s career places those events after the murder, but does not establish his father’s death as the sole cause of his retirement.
In a CBS interview, Jordan reflected on the time he had with his father and his influence: “But I had him for 32 years and he taught me a lot in 32 years. You know how many kids get that opportunity? Very few in today’s society get the chance to spend that much time with their parents, and get that type of influence.” CBS interview.
