Honduran police spokesman Luis Aguilar told CBS: “The car rolled for reasons that we still don’t know, and that are being investigated.” That statement establishes what police said at the time, but it does not identify a specific maneuver, mechanical problem, or other cause.
What is known about the crash—and what remains unclear?
The crash happened in Honduras on April 25, 2002. Reports differ on the precise location: CBS placed it near Jutiapa, north of Tegucigalpa, while Biography.com describes a highway in Roma, near La Ceiba. “In Honduras” is the most consistent description across those accounts.

Early accounts also differed about how the crash unfolded. In a CNN interview, former TLC manager Ian Burke said there were conflicting stories and tentatively recalled Lopes passing another car before what he believed was a head-on collision. He acknowledged that the facts were uncertain. His recollection is not an official reconstruction, and the police statement reported by CBS did not confirm that sequence.
Was Lopes filming a documentary in Honduras?
Yes. Lopes had traveled to Honduras with family and friends to film a documentary about her life. The IDFA archive entry for Last Days of Left Eye describes an 88-minute film directed by Lauren Lazin, assembled from Lopes’s footage, home movies, and archival material. IDFA says Lopes died 26 days into filming.
