The band came to a halt while its members grieved and considered whether it had a future. Mike Shinoda released solo music, including Post Traumatic, and the remaining members eventually began creating together again. Their public return came on 5 September 2024, when Emily Armstrong joined Shinoda as a vocalist and Colin Brittain became the drummer. The group released “The Emptiness Machine,” announced the album From Zero and resumed touring.
From Zero arrived on 15 November 2024, followed by a deluxe edition on 16 May 2025. The clearest description is therefore a seven-year pause followed by a re-formation and a new chapter—not a continuous Linkin Park album cycle and not an immediate substitution for Bennington.
What changed immediately after Chester Bennington died?
Bennington died in July 2017, two months after Linkin Park released One More Light. The loss stopped the band’s activity. Linkin Park’s official biography describes the group as coming to a “devastating halt,” with its future obscured by grief and unanswered questions.
The band’s next major public appearance was a tribute concert in October 2017. The group’s 2024 announcement described its later comeback performance as Linkin Park’s first live performance since that tribute. That gap matters: there was no immediate new singer, replacement tour or follow-up album presented as business as usual.

The pause also reflected the role Bennington played in the band’s identity. He was not simply one member among many on stage; his voice and public presence were central to Linkin Park’s songs and performances. The surviving members had to decide whether making music under the same name was possible and appropriate.
What did the members do during the seven-year gap?
Mike Shinoda’s solo work
Shinoda turned to solo music as a way to process the loss and reconnect with listeners. His album Post Traumatic addressed grief directly and gave him a creative outlet while Linkin Park’s future remained uncertain.
In a 2025 interview with The Guardian, Shinoda said he had paused Linkin Park after Bennington’s death. That wording is important. The band was not described as quietly maintaining a regular recording and touring schedule throughout the interval; the remaining members eventually resumed making music together after a period of uncertainty.
The rest of the band
Brad Delson, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell and Joe Hahn remained associated with the returning lineup. The official account says the members eventually began creating together again, but it does not establish a continuous, year-by-year Linkin Park production cycle between 2017 and 2024.

Rob Bourdon did not return for the 2024 lineup. The announcement confirms that fact but does not give a reason, so claims about his personal decision or circumstances go beyond what has been publicly established in the cited material.
Did Linkin Park break up?
There was a real interruption in the band’s activity, but the available account does not present a formal permanent breakup followed by a separate band using the name. After Bennington’s death, Linkin Park stopped operating publicly while its members dealt with grief. Years later, they began working together again and announced a new lineup.

“Pause” and “re-formation” are more accurate than saying the band carried on normally or that it disappeared forever. The 2024 return acknowledged Linkin Park’s history while introducing a different set of performers and a new phase of work.
Who sings for Linkin Park now?
Emily Armstrong’s role
Emily Armstrong joined the returning lineup as a vocalist, sharing vocal duties with Shinoda. Calling her a new vocalist is more precise than saying she simply “replaced” Bennington. The announcement presented a band with two vocalists and a changed creative configuration, not an attempt to reproduce the old lineup exactly.

Armstrong’s arrival generated backlash from some fans as well as later acceptance from others. Shinoda discussed that reaction in his 2025 interview, but fan response was mixed and evolving rather than a single measurable consensus. The public evidence does not support describing the reaction as either universally hostile or universally welcoming.
Colin Brittain’s role
Colin Brittain joined as drummer. His arrival changed another major onstage role because Bourdon did not return. The 2024 announcement therefore introduced two new members at once: Armstrong on vocals and Brittain on drums.
The returning members
| Member | Role in the 2024 return | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Mike Shinoda | Vocals and multi-instrumental duties | Returning member |
| Brad Delson | Guitar | Returning member |
| Dave “Phoenix” Farrell | Bass | Returning member |
| Joe Hahn | Turntables and production | Returning member |
| Emily Armstrong | Vocals alongside Shinoda | New member in the returning lineup |
| Colin Brittain | Drums | New member in the returning lineup |
| Rob Bourdon | Drums in the classic lineup | Did not return; no reason was given in the announcement |
When did Linkin Park return?
On 5 September 2024, Linkin Park performed publicly for the first time in seven years. The event introduced Armstrong and Brittain, unveiled “The Emptiness Machine,” announced From Zero and revealed a supporting tour.
The return was framed as a continuation of the band’s story rather than a denial of what happened. Shinoda described the new music as “past, present, and future,” adding that it embraced Linkin Park’s signature sound while being “new and full of life.” The band’s official biography similarly quotes him saying, “The privilege of creating music and sharing it is what drives us.”

What is From Zero?
Release and meaning
From Zero was released on 15 November 2024. It was Linkin Park’s first full-length studio album since One More Light in 2017, making it the first album released after Bennington’s death and the first to feature Armstrong and Brittain in the new lineup.
The title recalls the band’s original name, Xero. That reference connects the current group to its earliest history while signaling a reset. It does not erase the albums made with Bennington; it identifies the new record as the beginning of another phase.
Deluxe edition
Linkin Park’s official catalog lists From Zero (Deluxe Edition) with a release date of 16 May 2025. Physical formats, retail stock and track availability can vary, so those details should be checked against the current official catalog or retailer listing rather than assumed from an older announcement.
How should a new listener approach the post-2017 catalog?
There are two useful ways to hear the transition. Start with One More Light to understand the last studio album made with Bennington, then listen to Shinoda’s Post Traumatic as a solo document of the period when Linkin Park was paused. Finish with “The Emptiness Machine” and From Zero to hear the 2024 lineup establish its own identity. This order treats the releases as connected points in time without suggesting that Shinoda’s solo album is a Linkin Park record.
Listeners can also begin with From Zero on its own. The album was presented as a fresh chapter that retains recognizable elements of the band’s sound while involving new performers. Neither approach requires treating Armstrong as a replacement voice whose job is to copy Bennington. The stated setup is a shared vocal arrangement with Shinoda.
How did the band address its past?
The comeback’s language repeatedly placed the old and new periods side by side. The songs and lineup were presented as carrying recognizable Linkin Park elements forward while allowing different performers to shape the sound. That is why describing Armstrong as a voice who recreates Bennington’s role misses the stated concept: she shares vocals with Shinoda in a rebuilt lineup.

Shinoda’s comments also show that grief remained part of the story. In 2025 he said that “One More Light” felt too sad for him to perform at that time. This was his view in that interview, not a permanent rule about the song or a definitive statement about how Linkin Park will treat Bennington’s material in every future performance.
What happened with touring after the comeback?
The September 2024 announcement included a supporting tour. Linkin Park’s official biography later described the group as undertaking a two-year From Zero World Tour. Tour dates, setlists and venue information are changeable, so anyone planning to attend should verify the current schedule on the band’s official tour page.
The tour represented the practical test of the new arrangement: Shinoda and Armstrong sharing vocal duties, Brittain on drums and the returning members performing alongside them. It was not a continuation of the touring cycle that ended with Bennington; it was the live launch of the From Zero era.
What should fans not assume?
Three common shortcuts distort the timeline. First, the band did not announce an immediate replacement after Bennington’s death; the public return came seven years later. Second, the members were not documented as continuously touring or recording as Linkin Park throughout the gap. Third, Bourdon’s absence is confirmed, but the announcement does not establish why he did not return. Keeping those distinctions protects the difference between documented events and speculation.
It is also too simple to describe the audience reaction as one fixed verdict. Armstrong’s arrival prompted criticism from some fans and later acceptance from others, according to Shinoda’s 2025 discussion. That response changed over time and should not be turned into an unsupported percentage or universal claim.
