Investigators said Freddie Glenn and Michael Corbett had attempted to rob the restaurant and took Karen because they feared she could identify them. Contemporary reports said she was raped and stabbed before her body was found.
Glenn was convicted of Karen’s murder and sentenced to death in 1976, but he was never executed. Changes to Colorado’s death-penalty laws ultimately left him serving life in prison, with parole eligibility under the older legal framework. His parole requests have repeatedly been denied. Kelsey Grammer has since spoken about the grief and guilt that followed his sister’s death, and his 2025 memoir, Karen: A Brother Remembers, places Karen’s life—not only her connection to a famous brother—at the center of the story.
Karen Grammer’s life before the crime
Later accounts often begin with Kelsey Grammer, who went on to become an actor known for Cheers, Frasier, and other television and film roles. But Karen was not simply “Kelsey Grammer’s sister.” She was an 18-year-old recent high-school graduate who worked at the Red Lobster on South Academy Boulevard in Colorado Springs.

The available court records and contemporary reporting establish the basic facts of Karen’s killing, while Kelsey’s later interviews and memoir describe the emotional consequences for the family. Those are related but different kinds of evidence.

What happened to Karen Grammer?
On July 1, 1975, Karen was abducted outside the Red Lobster restaurant. Investigators said the perpetrators had attempted to rob the restaurant and kidnapped her because they believed she might be able to identify them.
Contemporary reports described Karen as having been raped and stabbed. The reports mention wounds to her throat, back, and hand, but there is no need to repeat the most graphic details to understand the case. The essential fact is that an attempted robbery became an abduction and murder.
Karen’s body was unidentified for roughly a week. Her roommate eventually reported her missing, and Kelsey identified her. Accounts differ on minor details, including the exact day Kelsey learned of the identification and the number of people involved in the broader events. The consistently documented facts are the July 1 date, the Colorado Springs location, Karen’s age, and the subsequent identification by her family.
The 1975 Colorado Springs killing spree
Karen’s murder was part of a wider series of killings in Colorado Springs in 1975. Freddie Glenn and Michael Corbett were identified in connection with the robbery and the broader spree, which also involved the killings of Daniel Van Lone and Winfred Proffitt.
The roles attributed to the participants vary across later retellings. Some accounts describe two men, while others refer to additional people or describe the participants differently. For that reason, it is important not to treat every later summary as proof that each person played the same role in every crime.
The court record reviewed in connection with Karen’s case establishes that Freddie Glenn was convicted of her murder. The record also reflects convictions for first-degree murder in the deaths of Van Lone and Proffitt, as well as convictions that included second-degree kidnapping and aggravated robbery. The contemporary account reviewed here identifies Glenn—not Corbett—as the person convicted of Karen’s murder.
Who was convicted in Karen’s murder?
| Person | What the available record shows | Later outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Freddie Glenn | Convicted of first-degree murder in Karen Grammer’s death and of first-degree murders involving Daniel Van Lone and Winfred Proffitt. His convictions also included second-degree kidnapping and aggravated robbery. | Sentenced to death on May 7, 1976. The sentence later became life imprisonment after changes affecting Colorado’s death-penalty framework. He remained eligible to seek parole under the older legal regime. |
| Michael Corbett | Connected to Glenn in the robbery and the broader Colorado Springs killing spree, and separately convicted in connection with that wider series of crimes. | Remained incarcerated and died of natural causes at a Denver-area hospital on June 24, 2019, according to the El Paso County district attorney’s office as reported by The Gazette. |
That distinction is central: it would be inaccurate to say, without qualification, that Corbett received the same conviction for Karen’s killing. The accessible contemporary account and court material identify Glenn as the person convicted of Karen’s murder.
Why Freddie Glenn was not executed
Glenn was initially sentenced to death. He was not executed because Colorado’s death-penalty framework changed after his conviction, affecting the legal status of death sentences imposed under the older system. Reporting on the case describes Glenn’s death sentence as having been converted to life imprisonment.
The parole issue can be confusing because Colorado’s later rules generally barred parole for people sentenced to life for first-degree murder, while Glenn’s sentence originated under the earlier legal regime. He therefore remained able to seek parole even though a person sentenced under later rules might not have had the same opportunity.

Parole eligibility did not erase the conviction, reduce the seriousness of the sentence, or mean that release was likely. It meant only that Glenn could ask a parole board to consider whether he should be released.
Kelsey Grammer’s opposition to parole—and his forgiveness
Kelsey Grammer appeared in the parole history more than three decades after Karen’s death. In 2009, he sent a strongly worded statement opposing Glenn’s release. Glenn apologized to the parole board during that process.

He said that he accepted Glenn’s apology and forgave him. But he also made clear that forgiveness was not the same as supporting parole: he said that backing Glenn’s release would betray Karen’s life. The board denied parole.
This distinction is one of the most important parts of the later story. Forgiveness, for Grammer, was a personal or spiritual decision. Parole was a separate question about public safety, accountability, and the consequences of Karen’s murder. The two positions were not contradictory.
Where is Freddie Glenn now?
The latest accessible reporting reviewed for this account, dated August 12, 2026, indicates that Glenn remained incarcerated after another parole denial in 2022. Secondary reports said he could next seek parole in 2027.
The exact 2027 hearing date and Glenn’s current prison facility were not independently confirmed through an accessible official Colorado Department of Corrections or parole-board record. Accordingly, the careful wording is that he was reported to be eligible to seek parole again in 2027—not that a specific hearing date had been officially scheduled or that release was imminent.
His current status should be checked against Colorado’s official inmate and parole records before publication of any update that names a facility, hearing date, or decision. Prison placement and parole calendars can change, and older articles may continue to circulate after the underlying information is no longer current.
How Karen’s death affected Kelsey Grammer
In interviews and later reflections, Kelsey Grammer has described Karen’s death as a source of profound grief, guilt, addiction, and a crisis of faith. His public comments have not presented a simple recovery narrative. Instead, they describe decades of trying to live with a violent loss that occurred when he and Karen were young.
In 2025, Grammer published Karen: A Brother Remembers, a memoir about Karen’s life and murder and his experience of losing her. HarperCollins lists the publication date as May 6, 2025, and classifies the book partly as true crime and memoir. The print edition is identified by ISBN 9781400252817, while the downloadable audiobook edition is identified by ISBN 9781400252831 and is narrated by Grammer.

The 1975 murder was later dramatized in an episode of Homicide Hunter titled Animal Nature. What is firmly documented—and what remains uncertain?
- Firmly documented: Karen was 18; the crime occurred on July 1, 1975, in Colorado Springs; she was abducted outside the Red Lobster on South Academy Boulevard; Glenn was convicted of her murder; and he received a death sentence in 1976.
- Firmly documented: Glenn’s convictions also involved the murders of Daniel Van Lone and Winfred Proffitt, along with kidnapping and aggravated robbery charges.
- Established by later reporting: The death sentence did not result in execution, Glenn’s sentence became life imprisonment, and his parole requests were denied, including the 2009 and 2014 proceedings and a later denial reported in 2022.
- Best treated cautiously: The exact number and role of every participant, the precise date Kelsey was notified of the identification, Glenn’s current facility, and the exact date of any 2027 parole hearing.
- Personal rather than court-established: Kelsey Grammer’s descriptions of grief, guilt, addiction, faith, forgiveness, and the long-term effect of Karen’s death. Those reflections are important to the family’s story, but they are memoir and interview material rather than findings of the criminal court.
