Thomas’s explanation was straightforward: after working from childhood, he wanted time for experiences outside a set. In a 2013 People interview, quoted by Us Weekly, he said, “I’d been going nonstop since I was 8 years old. I wanted to go to school, to travel and have a bit of a break.” He also described being in a university library among books and students as a novel experience.

Thomas left Home Improvement before the sitcom’s finale. He studied at Harvard and Columbia, and later at the University of St Andrews, according to the career coverage from Us Weekly. His departure was a move away from a regular acting schedule, not the end of all acting work.
What he did after Home Improvement
Thomas is best known for playing Randy Taylor on Home Improvement, which ran for eight seasons and ended in 1999, and for voicing young Simba in the 1994 animated film The Lion King. Those two roles showcased different sides of his early career: a live-action sitcom performance and animation voice work.

He later took selected television roles and reunited with Tim Allen on Last Man Standing. Alongside acting on the series, Thomas directed three episodes. That is evidence of work behind the camera as well as in front of it, but it does not establish a sustained return to acting.
What is known about Thomas now
Thomas maintains a low public profile, so public appearances offer only limited clues about his present life. In July 2026, former Home Improvement co-star Patricia Richardson shared a reunion photo with Thomas and Taran Noah Smith, captioned “My other boys ❤️,” as reported by The Daily Beast. The photo confirms a reunion, not his current occupation or plans.

Richardson said in a March 2024 podcast appearance, as reported by Us Weekly, that Thomas was “not really interested in acting” and wanted to direct and write. That is Richardson’s account of his interests at the time, not a current statement from Thomas or proof that he is working in either field.
Tim Allen has also said Thomas visited the set of Shifting Gears, according to the same Us Weekly coverage. A visit does not mean Thomas appeared in the series or is preparing a comeback. Public information does not establish that he has retired permanently, holds a particular full-time job or is attached to a specific current project.
