A later report described the relationship as on and off, with a brief reconciliation before a second split by October 2017. The reporting does not establish a specific cause, and neither actor is quoted explaining the breakup in the coverage available.
The timeline, as reported
Entertainment outlets reported the sequence below. Most of these details come from outlet reporting or anonymous sources rather than statements from the couple, so the dates are best read as “reportedly.”
| When | What was reported | Source as described in coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 2012 | Wesley and Tonkin meet on the set of The Vampire Diaries. | Contemporaneous entertainment reporting |
| Summer 2013 | The couple begins dating. | Contemporaneous entertainment reporting; reports place the start of the relationship in 2013 |
| March 9, 2017 | A split after nearly four years of dating. | E! News, citing an unnamed source |
| April 2017 | A brief reconciliation. | Us Weekly, October 16, 2017 |
| By October 2017 | A second split. | Us Weekly, October 16, 2017 |
What the anonymous source said
E! News attributed the following wording to an unnamed source: “They are still good friends. The relationship just ran its course.” The report does not identify the speaker or their connection to the couple, so the words should not be presented as a statement from Wesley or Tonkin, or as their own explanation of the split.
The phrase “ran its course” is therefore one person’s characterization, reported secondhand. It describes the relationship’s ending in general terms and does not point to a specific event, disagreement or decision.

What the reporting does not establish
- A cause for the breakup. The coverage reviewed offers no detailed reason, and claims about infidelity, conflict or blame are not supported by it.
- An on-record explanation. No verbatim statement from either actor about the split appears in these reports.
- The current status of the relationship. The most recent reporting cited here is from October 2017, so it cannot speak to later years.
How to describe the relationship accurately
When writing about the couple, say that they dated for nearly four years, that the split was reported in March 2017, and that a later report described a brief reconciliation followed by a second split. Attribute the “ran its course” line to an unnamed source, and avoid describing either person’s private reasons unless they have spoken on the record.

Two outlets carry most of the public account. E! News reported the March 2017 split, and Us Weekly’s October 16, 2017 report described the on-and-off pattern. Both are entertainment-news accounts, and the sourcing for their key details is not independently confirmed in the coverage reviewed here.

Anyone checking this story should look for statements from Wesley or Tonkin themselves in interviews or social media posts. Those would carry more weight than any secondhand account, and none is established in the reporting above.
