Wright has said that part of the reason they kept getting back together was an effort to hold their family together. Public reporting does not establish a single private event or cause behind the final split, and the financial terms of the settlement were never made public.
Timeline of the relationship and divorce
The milestones below are the ones contemporaneous reporting documents. Dates are given as reported; where a source gives only a month or year, that is what is stated.
| Date | What was reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| By 1989 | Wright and Penn were in a relationship. | Reporting compiled from Biography.com and contemporary coverage |
| 1991 and 1993 | Their daughter, Dylan, and son, Hopper, were born. | Biography.com |
| 1996 | The couple married. | Biography.com |
| December 2007 | Wright filed for divorce and then withdrew the filing. | Reuters |
| April–May 2009 | Penn sought a legal separation and then withdrew the request, which he later called “an arrogant mistake.” | Reuters |
| August 2009 | Wright filed again, citing irreconcilable differences. | Reuters |
| July 2010 | The divorce became final. Shared custody of their son was reported; the financial settlement was not filed publicly. | Associated Press |
The pattern is worth reading as a sequence rather than a single break. Two filings and two withdrawals, spread over roughly two and a half years, show a marriage that repeatedly moved toward separation and then pulled back. The dates describe filings and court actions; they do not by themselves explain the reasons behind them.
Why they kept reuniting: Wright’s account
The most direct explanation on the record comes from Wright herself. In an interview with The Telegraph, later reported by ABC News in 2014, she said:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems#1 Best Overall

“Divorce in and of itself, and with children, is devastating. Worse than that. One of the reasons why we got back together and broke up so much was trying to keep the family together… and we did that for a long time.”
In the same interview she described Penn as remaining present in the children’s lives and said that each family member had a separate life of their own. That is Wright’s stated framing of the years of reconciliations. It explains why the couple returned to each other; it does not, on its own, explain why the marriage ended when it did.

How Wright described Penn in 2004
A 2004 interview, reproduced by Biography.com, offers an earlier view of the relationship in Wright’s own words:
“It’s always been drama in my life with Sean, always. It’s pronounced: That’s the word I would use for him, in every way —presence, emotional life—’pronounced’. I think it’s in his blood. He’s always at the heart of something. Never a dull moment.”

This is a characterization from that point in time, offered in an interview rather than a legal or documentary record. It describes how Wright experienced the relationship in 2004, three years before the first filing, and should be read as her perception then, not as an explanation of the divorce.
What the court record establishes
The filings and their withdrawals are the best-documented part of the story. The divorce was finalized in July 2010. Contemporary outlets give slightly different days for the final order, so the month is the reliable date to rely on here. The Associated Press reported that the former couple shared custody of their son, who was then a teenager. The financial settlement was not filed publicly, so any figures attached to it are speculation and should be treated as such.

What is not established
Coverage at the time and in later interviews does not identify one incident, decision or event as the cause of the final separation. Reporting that the couple reconciled repeatedly, and Wright’s explanation that they were trying to keep the family intact, are the documented elements. Claims about infidelity, abuse or a specific private episode have circulated in tabloid commentary, but the reviewed reporting does not substantiate them as the reason for the divorce, and this article does not treat them as established.

In a September 2025 report by EL PAÍS, based on an interview, Wright described her current relationship with Penn as friendly and said their adult children were doing well. That is her description at the time of the interview. It is not an independently verified account of their private relationship, and it does not change the historical record of the divorce.
