Neither has publicly given a verified reason for the breakup, and the available reporting does not establish who ended it. What is documented is the timeline, a few public remarks from each, and the limits of the one contemporaneous account of the split.
The timeline, as reported
Meester played Blair Waldorf and Stan played Carter Baizen on the CW series, so their relationship grew out of a working one. Retrospective entertainment coverage says they met on set, but it does not give a precise date for when they first went out. The commonly cited start year is 2008, and the commonly cited end year is 2010.
The 2010 breakup report and its limits
The main contemporaneous report of the split came from OK! on April 8, 2010. That article said the couple had separated, but its account of the circumstances rested on an unnamed friend. Claims about who ended the relationship and how Stan reacted to it come from that anonymous sourcing and should be treated as unverified tabloid reporting rather than established fact.
Later retrospective pieces repeat the 2008 to 2010 framing, but they generally rely on the same earlier reporting rather than on new confirmation from either person. Treat them as a summary of the public record, not as independent evidence of why the relationship ended.

What each of them has said publicly
Public comments are the most reliable material available, although each one is a short quote as it was reproduced in entertainment coverage.
- Sebastian Stan, 2009: Speaking to reporters about Meester, he described her as “the most interesting, sophisticated, talented and an extremely funny person that I know. She’s really hilarious.” Parade reproduced the remark in its relationship-history coverage.
- Leighton Meester, in a Seventeen interview: As quoted by Yahoo Entertainment and Parade, she said, “I’ve only had one experience where it was really hard and I was really sad when it ended, but that’s what taught me a lot about myself and love and life — and that’s good.” The later coverage attributes this remark to her relationship with Stan. The original interview transcript was not available for checking, so the wording should be presented as reported.

What remains unknown
- The exact date the relationship began.
- The reason for the split, and whether either person initiated it.
- Whether the 2010 separation was ever publicly confirmed in a statement from either person.
Until either of them addresses these points directly, anything beyond the timeline and the quoted remarks should be treated as speculation.
