Spoilers through Season 2, Episode 9. Javi Martinez dies in Season 2, Episode 8, “It Chooses.” After Natalie is selected for the group’s hunt, Javi tries to help her escape across a frozen lake, falls through the ice, and drowns. Misty prevents Natalie from going back to save him, believing the others will kill Natalie if Javi survives.
How Javi dies
During “It Chooses,” the group draws cards to choose someone to hunt, and Natalie is selected. She runs, and Javi finds her. He leads her toward a hidden refuge and tries to get her across a frozen lake. The ice gives way beneath him.
Natalie initially reaches toward Javi, but Misty pulls her back and warns that the others will kill Natalie if Javi lives. Javi drowns; the group later retrieves his body. The episode’s physical events are recapped by TIME and Paramount+.
What his death means to the group
Javi’s death ends the immediate hunt for Natalie. The girls interpret what happened as the wilderness choosing Javi instead of her, and Lottie says in the finale that the wilderness has chosen who should lead: Natalie. That is the group’s interpretation, not proof that a supernatural force caused Javi’s death.

Coach Ben does not share the girls’ certainty. In an interview with TIME, co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco described the episode as testing competing possibilities: “When you have people believing in something that they think is supernatural or phenomenological or religious, and others who think things are just random, what better way to test each side’s hypotheses?” The fall and drowning are clear; what they signify remains open to interpretation.
What happens to Javi’s body
In the Season 2 finale, Coach Ben discovers the refuge and returns to camp, where he finds the girls butchering Javi’s body. Travis takes the first bite. Actor Kevin Alves, who plays Travis, described Travis as confronting survival after his brother’s death and said Travis feels responsible because Javi died after Travis chose to save Natalie. That is Alves’s explanation of Travis’s guilt, rather than a direct statement of dialogue; Entertainment Tonight discusses his account.

What is known about Javi’s time missing
Javi had been missing since the girls’ hallucinogenic “Doomcoming” in Season 1 and was presumed dead for much of the time before he reappeared in Season 2. The sources cited here do not establish a complete account of what happened to him while he was gone, so theories about that period should not be treated as confirmed answers.
