Frank Darabont’s proposed The Thing sequel was a four-hour Syfy miniseries written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. It was never produced. Syfy’s retrospective says Universal shifted toward a theatrical revival, which became the 2011 film—but that movie is a prequel, not Darabont’s sequel.

What was Frank Darabont’s proposed The Thing sequel?

In the mid-2000s, Syfy developed a four-hour television miniseries intended as a sequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick wrote the script, and Darabont was attached as a producer. Syfy later described a proposal that widened the story beyond an isolated Antarctic horror scenario.

A broader story than the original film

According to Syfy’s retrospective, reported elements included political maneuvering, a redemption story, Native American folklore, family drama, a pseudo-origin story for the creature, large action sequences and body horror. These are descriptions of the proposal, not scenes from a completed series or an authorized release. Syfy’s retrospective is the source for the project’s reported development and story details.

Syfy also reported that the script could be found online. That report does not establish that a circulating copy is authentic or that the rights holder officially published it, so it should not be treated as an official script edition.

Why didn’t the miniseries happen?

Syfy’s account is that Universal changed course and focused on a theatrical revival. The sources establish that development shift, but not a precise cancellation date, a formal cancellation announcement or a definitive account of executives’ motives.

The resulting project was The Thing (2011), directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. It takes place at the Norwegian camp before the events of Carpenter’s film. Universal calls it a “chilling prelude” to the 1982 classic on its official film page. That makes the 2011 movie a prequel—not the Darabont miniseries, and not the sequel that Syfy had developed.

What did John Carpenter say about a direct sequel?

Carpenter’s comments about sequel possibilities were separate from the Syfy project. In a Creative Screenwriting interview, when asked whether serious sequel discussions had taken place, he answered, “Nothing serious, no.” In that interview he also said he would consider a story based on the Dark Horse comic series, in which MacReady and Childs are discovered and eventually brought to a submarine. At a 2012 panel, Carpenter again recommended the 1980s Dark Horse limited series as a possible basis for a direct sequel: “Well, if there was a Thing 2, not a prequel but a sequel to the movie that I made, I would recommend all of you get the limited series from the 80s, The Thing, the Dark Horse comic series.” Dread Central’s report on the panel records the comment. His recommendation was an idea for a possible sequel, not confirmation that one was in production.
