Spoilers for Arcane Season 2, Episode 7. Heimerdinger appears to sacrifice himself so Ekko can return to their original reality. He stays behind during the return-device sequence and disappears, but the episode does not confirm that he is permanently dead. Netflix’s official material and a creator interview do not settle whether he survived or will return.
What happens to Heimerdinger in Episode 7?
In “Pretend Like It’s the First Time,” the anomaly draws Heimerdinger and Ekko into a parallel reality. Heimerdinger helps Ekko work out how to get back. When they reach the final step of the return-device sequence, Heimerdinger stays behind, giving Ekko the chance to return. He then disappears from the scene. TechRadar’s ending explainer describes the moment as an apparent demise; the scene supports calling it a sacrifice, not a confirmed permanent death.
Why are Heimerdinger and Ekko caught in the anomaly?
The anomaly is connected to Viktor, the Hexcore, and unstable Arcane energy. Netflix’s production feature describes it as a raw, unstable expression of the Arcane that distorts reality. In the episode’s account, that distortion sends Heimerdinger and Ekko to a parallel reality, where they have to find a way back. Netflix’s production feature explains the anomaly’s connection to the Hexcore and its reality-bending effects.
Why does Heimerdinger stay behind?
His choice is the culmination of a shift in how he acts. Netflix’s character guide says Heimerdinger had warned Piltover’s Council about using magic without tangible safeguards. After learning from his mistakes with Jayce, he works alongside Ekko and inspires him to keep searching for a solution rather than remaining only a cautious adviser. Staying behind is an active choice to help Ekko, consistent with that change. Netflix’s season guide describes Heimerdinger and Ekko working together.

Is Heimerdinger dead, or could he return?
The ending leaves his fate unresolved: he appears to sacrifice himself and vanishes, but the official material cited here does not explicitly say that he died permanently. In a November 27, 2024 interview, Arcane co-creator Christian Linke spoke about Heimerdinger’s place in the series’ tone, calling him part of its “whimsy.” That is creative commentary, not confirmation that Heimerdinger survived the scene or will appear again. Linke’s Teen Vogue interview does not resolve his post-sacrifice fate.
Netflix describes Arcane’s story as wrapping with Season 2 and says more stories set in Runeterra are planned. That broader slate does not establish that Heimerdinger will be in another story. Fan theories about Yordle immortality, respawning, or a future appearance are not confirmation of what happened in the series.
