What Happened to Enslaved People in the Sokoto Caliphate?

Enslaved people in the Sokoto Caliphate were captured in wars, raids and tribute-taking, then assigned to agricultural, domestic, commercial, military and administrative work. Women were also held as concubines. Some secured freedom through redemption, manumission, judicial remedies or escape, but access to those routes was unequal. The British conquest of 1897–1903 did not end slavery immediately: legal abolition in the British Protectorate of Northern Nigeria came in 1936, and formal freedom did not erase the social power of former owners.

What the Sokoto Caliphate was—and when its slavery system operated

The Sokoto Caliphate emerged in the early nineteenth century and governed a large region covering parts of present-day Burkina Faso, Niger, northern Nigeria and Cameroon. It ceased to be an independent state after British conquest; 1903, when Kano was conquered and Sokoto independence ended, is the practical endpoint for the precolonial polity. That date is not the date slavery ended.

To answer what happened to enslaved people, it is essential to separate two periods:

  • Caliphate rule: enslavement was a central institution of the political economy, law and social order.
  • Colonial rule after conquest: British authorities gradually dismantled legal slavery and the slave trade, with abolition in 1936 in the protectorate that covered most of the former caliphate.

Individual lives varied sharply. A plantation laborer, a household servant, a soldier attached to an emir, a person in a royal office and a concubine did not experience enslavement in the same way. Gender, age, owner, occupation, location and proximity to political power all affected daily life, while all remained subject to the coercion of an enslaved status.

How people were enslaved

War, raiding and tribute

The caliphate’s expansion supplied captives through warfare and organized raids. Communities defeated or subordinated by the state could be required to provide people as tribute. Captives taken in campaigns might be distributed among commanders, rulers and other claimants, sold through regional markets or retained for labor and service.

State-building and enslavement were therefore connected. Military victories expanded territory and created a continuing supply of labor, while enslaved soldiers and officials could help rulers govern and fight. This does not mean every enslaved person was captured in a battlefield operation: raiding, tribute demands and subsequent sales also separated people from their families and communities.

Legal classification and the protected status of some Muslims

Authorities working within a Mālikī legal framework distinguished between people they considered freeborn Muslims and communities classified as non-Muslim. Leaders sought to prevent the unlawful enslavement of freeborn Muslims, while permitting enslavement and trade involving people placed in the latter category. The distinction could regulate who was legally eligible for enslavement, but it was not an abolition policy.

Law shaped claims about legitimate capture, ownership, treatment and release. Local officials, judges and owners still interpreted and applied those rules in particular circumstances. A legal prohibition on enslaving someone deemed free did not guarantee that the person would be recognized as free, nor did regulations prevent violence, kidnapping or fraudulent reclassification.

How large was the enslaved population?

Historian Paul E. Lovejoy and economic historian Jan S. Hogendorn estimated that “Certainly in excess of 1 million and perhaps more than 2.5 million people” were enslaved in the Sokoto Caliphate at the time of colonial conquest (1993). This is a wide scholarly estimate, not a census. The range reflects the difficulty of counting a mobile population spread across rural estates, households, military establishments, markets and royal institutions.

The estimate should not be read as a precise total for one year or as proof that every district had the same ratio of enslaved to free people. It does establish the scale: slavery was not a marginal practice affecting a few households, but a major institution at the moment British forces defeated the caliphate.

What work did enslaved people perform?

Agriculture employed most enslaved people. Some worked on plantations producing food and commodities for local consumption and export markets; others cultivated land attached to households, villages or political estates. The labor system, crop, season and owner determined how work was organized and how much supervision or coercion workers faced.

Setting or occupation What the evidence indicates Important qualification
Agriculture and plantations The largest share worked in farming; some plantation systems supplied local and export markets. Plantation labor was one context, not a description of every enslaved person’s life.
Domestic service Enslaved people cooked, cleaned, carried water, cared for children and performed other household tasks. Living in a household did not remove the owner’s control over movement, labor or family life.
Portering, mining and trade People transported goods, extracted minerals and worked in commercial activities. Conditions varied with distance, supervision, hazards and the type of enterprise.
Cattle-raising Some were assigned to herding and other pastoral work. Pastoral labor had different routines from farming but remained coerced labor.
Military service Enslaved men could serve as soldiers, guards or retainers. Military responsibility could bring status or material privileges without changing enslaved legal status.
Royal and administrative service Royal slaves could hold trusted posts in courts, treasuries, communications or provincial administration. Political access did not make them free; their position depended on rulers and institutions.
Concubinage and reproductive labor Women were held as concubines and valued for both productive and reproductive labor. Sexual access and childbearing were forms of coercion, not evidence of voluntary domestic relationships.

Jennifer Lofkrantz summarizes the gendered pattern this way: “The vast majority of slaves worked in agriculture and most slaves were women who were valued for both their productive and reproductive abilities.” The sentence captures two linked realities: farming dominated the labor system, and women’s work included both the production of goods and the expectation that they would bear children whose status and family relationships were controlled by owners and local law.

Why experiences differed by status, gender and owner

Plantation labor and rural production

People on plantations could be organized in work gangs or household units and might be moved when an owner transferred or sold them. Their labor supported food supplies, taxation, elite consumption and trade. The existence of regular agricultural routines should not be mistaken for freedom to choose an occupation, leave an estate or reunite with relatives.

Households, armies and royal institutions

Household service, military duty and royal office sometimes gave enslaved people access to education, weapons, patronage, income or influential contacts unavailable to field laborers. Those advantages were contingent. A soldier could be reassigned; a court official could lose protection when a patron died; a domestic worker remained vulnerable to sale, punishment and sexual exploitation. Incorporation into a household or state institution could alter an individual’s opportunities without ending the underlying coercion.

Women’s particular exposure

Women performed agricultural, domestic and commercial work and were also subjected to concubinage. Their reproductive capacity was treated as an economic asset. The gender division of labor later affected emancipation as well: women often had fewer opportunities to earn and save the money required for redemption, while officials sometimes interpreted a woman’s departure from an owner as a marital dispute rather than an emancipation claim.

How could an enslaved person become free?

Redemption by the enslaved person

Self-redemption allowed an enslaved person to pay an agreed amount to obtain release. It was a recognized legal route, but it required access to money, trustworthy contacts and the ability to retain earnings. Agricultural workers and many women had fewer opportunities to accumulate the necessary funds.

Payment by a third party

A relative, friend, religious associate or other benefactor could pay a person’s redemption price. This route protected selected captives but depended on someone outside the owner’s control having the resources and willingness to intervene. It was not a general solution for a population numbering in the millions.

Manumission by an owner

An owner could release an enslaved person. Manumission might be promised in a contract, granted as a reward or arranged near an owner’s death. Because the decision rested with the owner, it was uncertain and could leave relatives in bondage even when one person was freed.

Judicial release for gross maltreatment

Courts could order release in cases of severe abuse. This remedy recognized that an owner’s authority had legal limits, but reaching a judge required knowledge of the law, physical access to a court and confidence that officials would hear the complaint. Those barriers made judicial freedom unevenly available.

Rights connected to concubinage and acknowledged children

A concubine whose owner acknowledged paternity of her child could acquire specific legal rights that improved her prospects for release. The rule did not make concubinage voluntary or immediately free every mother and child; it tied a woman’s legal position to an owner’s acknowledgment and to the operation of courts and local practice.

Escape and other forms of agency

Enslaved people also resisted by leaving owners, seeking protection elsewhere and building new lives. Escape was dangerous: a person could be pursued, recaptured or blocked by dependence on food, shelter and community ties. Still, the existence of legal petitions alongside flight shows that enslaved people were actors who pursued family security, income and autonomy rather than passive recipients of policy.

What role did ransoming play?

Ransoming was used to protect particular captives from enslavement, including people whose communities or associates could raise payment. Scholarship on the caliphate examines both efforts to prevent illegal enslavement and the acceptance of ransoming as a way to recover selected people. Ransom was selective and negotiable, not a universal remedy and not evidence that the institution was disappearing. Captives without wealthy relatives, political patrons or a community able to pay could remain enslaved.

What changed after the British conquest?

Date or period Development What it did—and did not do
Early 19th century to 1897 Sokoto Caliphate operated as an independent state with slavery embedded in its economy and institutions. Enslavement, slave trading and coerced labor continued under caliphate authority and local legal practice.
1897–1903 British conquest of northern territories, including Kano in 1903. Ended Sokoto’s independence but did not immediately free all enslaved people; slavery and trade still functioned at conquest.
Colonial transition before 1936 British authorities pursued gradual change and redemption. Rules allowed enslaved people to seek or receive redemption without an owner’s permission, and owners no longer set the redemption price. Access remained unequal.
1936 Slavery abolished in the British Protectorate of Northern Nigeria. Legal abolition ended the institution in the protectorate; it did not instantly dissolve dependency, debt, household control or social rank.

British policy was deliberately gradual rather than an immediate emancipation order. The conquest administration had to govern territories where elites, farms, markets and households depended on enslaved labor. Redemption offered a controlled path out, but a price-based system favored people who could earn or borrow money. Women were especially disadvantaged by limits on paid work and savings; in some cases British officials treated an enslaved woman’s attempt to leave as a divorce matter, reinforcing the idea that she belonged in a household rather than exercising a freedom claim.

Why 1903 and 1936 are different dates

1903 marks the defeat of the caliphate as an independent political authority. It does not mark the end of slavery because owners still held people, markets still operated and colonial officials initially managed a transition rather than freeing everyone at once. 1936 is the legal abolition date for the British Protectorate of Northern Nigeria, the colonial territory covering most of the former caliphate. Even then, legal status changed faster than economic relationships.

Former owners could remain landlords, employers, patrons and local authorities. Freed people might continue working for them because they lacked land, cash, tools, protection or an alternative community. A certificate or legal declaration of freedom could therefore coexist with dependence that looked familiar in everyday life.

What happened to freed people afterward?

Emancipation removed the legal right to own a person, but it did not erase inherited social distinctions. Formerly enslaved people and their descendants often remained subordinate to former owners and their families. Access to land, marriage networks, office, education and political influence could be shaped by a person’s ancestry long after abolition. Scholarship on Northern Nigeria reports continuing barriers for people of slave descent; the extent and form of those barriers vary by community and period, so a single region-wide experience should not be assumed.

This long afterlife explains why “slavery ended in 1936” is an incomplete answer. It identifies a legal turning point, not the moment when every coercive relationship disappeared or when descendants received equal standing.

How to understand the Sokoto case without flattening it

  • Do not treat Islamic legal categories as an abolition system. Rules distinguishing freeborn Muslims from people classified as non-Muslim could limit some captures while authorizing others.
  • Do not treat every enslaved person as a plantation laborer. Agriculture predominated, but domestic, military, commercial and royal roles were substantial and shaped different lives.
  • Do not call the system uniformly mild or uniformly identical everywhere. Household incorporation or political office could provide privileges, yet the power to sell, punish, relocate or sexually exploit remained coercive.
  • Do not equate conquest with emancipation. British military victory in 1903 and legal abolition in 1936 were separate events.
  • Do not mistake legal options for equal access. Redemption, courts and escape required money, information, mobility or allies that many people—especially women—did not possess.
  • Do not collapse this history into another slavery system. The Sokoto institution had its own regional legal categories, political structures and labor arrangements; comparisons with Atlantic slavery require evidence about specific practices rather than a single label.

The central outcome is therefore a long transition: mass enslavement under the caliphate, limited and unequal routes to personal freedom, continued bondage through the early colonial period, legal abolition in 1936 and persistent social hierarchy after emancipation.
