Edsel Kellogg III, the character played by Jim Gaffigan in Netflix’s 2024 comedy Unfrosted, is fictional, so there is no real-life later biography for him. Marjorie Merriweather Post was a real businesswoman and philanthropist, but the film’s version of her involvement in the Pop-Tart race is invented: she left her role as a Post corporation director in 1958, six years before Pop-Tarts reached U.S. shelves.
Was Edsel Kellogg a real person?
No. Edsel Kellogg III is a fictional character created for Unfrosted; there is no real Edsel Kellogg III whose life continued after the events in the film. The movie borrows the names of real companies and a genuine product rivalry, then builds a comic story around them. History vs. Hollywood’s fact-check identifies the character as fictional.

Was Marjorie Post really involved in the Pop-Tart contest?
Marjorie Merriweather Post was real, but the film’s portrayal of her as a participant in the contest is not a reliable account of her actions. She had stepped down as a director of the Post corporation in 1958. Kellogg’s released Pop-Tarts in 1964, six years later. TIME’s account of the film’s history notes that chronology.
Who was the real Marjorie Merriweather Post?
Post was the daughter of C.W. Post, founder of the Postum Cereal Company, and became a prominent business executive and philanthropist. She died in 1973. Her actual career and timeline are distinct from the movie’s comic version of events.

What happened to Mar-a-Lago?
Netflix’s explainer says Post and her husband, E.F. Hutton, built Mar-a-Lago between 1924 and 1927. After Post’s death, she left the estate to the federal government, hoping it would serve for state visits or as a Winter White House. The government returned it to the Post Foundation in 1981, citing maintenance costs. Netflix Tudum’s explanation of the real people and places behind the film provides this history.
What part of *Unfrosted* is based on real events?
The corporate rivalry between Kellogg’s and Post in Battle Creek, Michigan, and the race to develop a toaster pastry have a real historical basis. Post announced its Country Squares while it was still working toward a wider release; Kellogg’s got Pop-Tarts to market first in 1964. Netflix lists the four original U.S. flavors as strawberry, blueberry, brown-sugar cinnamon, and apple-currant.

That factual starting point does not make the film’s personal plots or characters historical. As writer-director Jerry Seinfeld put it in Netflix Tudum’s July 17, 2024 explainer: “This really did happen in Battle Creek, Michigan, where Kellogg’s and Post were located, and they did compete to come up with this product, but the rest of our story is complete lunacy.”
