Channing Tatum’s planned solo Gambit movie was shelved after years in development and never went into production. Tatum has linked its demise to the Disney-Fox transition and a mismatch between the film’s intended tone and what Disney wanted. His later appearance as Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine was a separate project, not the completion of the canceled film.
Was the Gambit movie ever made?
No. 20th Century Fox greenlit a solo Gambit film in 2014 with Tatum attached to star, but it remained in development and never reached production. The team did extensive preparation, including previsualization, scene work and world design, but that work was not a completed film or confirmed principal photography. Producer Reid Carolin recalled that they were preparing to shoot in New Orleans when the project was shut down. The Associated Press reported on the project’s development and collapse, while TIME described its changing director attachments and planned production.
Why was Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie shelved?
The project’s end coincided with Disney’s acquisition of Fox. Tatum has also described a creative mismatch as a factor. In a 2023 interview with Vanity Fair, quoted by GamesRadar+, he said the tone of the movie they wanted to make was “very far from what they wanted to do.” He said the team had to let the project go.
That is Tatum’s account, not a detailed public cancellation explanation from Disney. The available reporting supports the timing of the Fox acquisition and Tatum’s view of the creative difference, but does not establish one exclusive internal studio rationale.

What kind of movie was planned?
Tatum described the intended film as an R-rated romantic comedy. In a 2025 interview reported by ComicBook.com, he recalled: “It was an R-rated romantic comedy. And when I say R-rated, I mean we went for it.” That describes the unproduced project’s intended tone; it was never a released film with an assigned rating.
Lizzy Caplan, who was attached to the film, recalled a “’30s kind of screwball romantic comedy set in that world,” according to ComingSoon.net. The comments point to a comedy with a period screwball influence, but do not establish a finished plot.

No standalone revival or release date is established in the sources available through October 8, 2026. In 2024, Ryan Reynolds said he believed Marvel executives were enthusiastic about Tatum in the role, while noting he did not know what happened behind closed doors. Tatum said he wanted a standalone film and that the decision rested with Disney and Marvel leadership, as Variety Australia reported. Those remarks show interest, not approval.
