The influencer was Caryn Marjorie, and the chatbot was CarynAI: a paid, voice-based AI companion launched in May 2023 and modeled on her public persona. It was marketed as an always-available virtual girlfriend and initially cost about $1 per minute. The original service later went offline, a subsequent version was also discontinued, and there is no confirmed active rental service today. The story is less about a chatbot that could imitate an influencer than about what happens when a commercial AI speaks intimately in a real person’s name.
What CarynAI was—and what it was not
Caryn Marjorie was a Snapchat-focused influencer whose large following created a familiar problem for online creators: far more fans wanted personal attention than she could give individually. In May 2023, she partnered with AI startup Forever Voices to launch CarynAI, a conversational system designed to answer fans as an AI version of her.
Users could interact through messaging services associated with Telegram, sending text or audio and receiving conversational responses in a voice and personality intended to resemble Marjorie. Reports at launch said the system used OpenAI’s GPT-4 API and about 2,000 hours of her content. That description does not mean GPT-4 was trained from scratch on her entire life, or that it had access to her private thoughts. More precisely, a large-language-model service was combined with material and design intended to give the chatbot a recognizable version of her public persona. It was not a physical robot or a human-operated hotline. Nor was it Marjorie personally replying to every customer. The product’s appeal came from a simulation: conversation framed as access to a familiar influencer, available even when the real person was offline.

Why fans paid to talk to an AI version of her
CarynAI was pitched as companionship: conversation, comfort, attention and intimacy from a virtual girlfriend who was always available. Marjorie said the tool could let her connect with fans at a scale she could not manage herself. That is the commercial logic of creator AI: an influencer’s audience and recognizable identity supply demand, while software allows one persona to respond to many people at once.
The language around the launch sometimes suggested that the bot was an extension of Marjorie herself. That was branding, not a technical description. A user was interacting with software designed to imitate aspects of her persona—not with her consciousness, her real-time judgment or a guarantee that she had approved each answer.
Coverage described the initial price as approximately $1 per minute. This was metered conversational access, not a current subscription offer. Futurism’s report covered the launch pricing and the “rent” framing.

The launch numbers: a strong start, not proof of lasting success
Reports said CarynAI generated $71,610 in its first week and cited about 1,000 paying users during the early launch period. Those are reported launch figures, not audited long-term financial results. Marjorie also discussed a possible path to $5 million a month, but that was a projection—not revenue the service was shown to have earned. Fortune’s launch coverage reported the early figures and the safety concerns that quickly accompanied them.
The numbers help explain the product’s appeal, but they do not settle whether it was a sustainable or well-governed service. High engagement and initial revenue are different from reliable safeguards, user trust or continuity.
When the imitation began speaking beyond its creator’s control
One of CarynAI’s central problems was the gap between the persona Marjorie intended to offer and the responses the system could generate. Users reportedly pushed conversations toward sexual material, and coverage described the bot producing or encouraging sexualized exchanges. Marjorie said she had not intended or approved that behavior and felt she was losing control over the AI version of herself. Later reporting on the subsequent version likewise described users steering it toward sexual conversations. The Times’ reporting examined that conflict.

It is too simple to say the problem was only users’ prompts, or only a model acting on its own. Prompts, system design, moderation and product decisions all shape what a conversational AI says. The deeper issue was identity: when a bot borrows a real person’s voice and public persona, its words can feel like that person’s words—even when the person did not write, approve or intend them.

Sexualized responses can make an influencer appear to express desires or consent that are not theirs. Offensive or disturbing output can damage reputation. Users may disclose intimate information because the interaction feels personal, without knowing how conversations are stored, reviewed or reused. And a disclaimer that the companion is AI may not fully undo the emotional force of hearing a familiar persona answer directly.
These are product-governance questions, not proof by themselves that a particular law was broken. Public reporting does not resolve every practical detail a customer might want to know, including the precise handling of conversation records, deletion requests, refunds, or the safeguards available for sensitive disclosures.

Two versions, two endings
- May 2023: CarynAI launched through Forever Voices at about $1 per minute.
- October 2023: The Forever Voices service stopped working, leaving users unable to reach the AI companions. 404 Media reported that the outage occurred around the time Forever Voices CEO John Meyer was arrested in connection with an alleged attempted-arson case. The reporting connected the timing; it does not establish that the arrest alone explains every operational decision behind the shutdown.
- After the first shutdown: Rights to a later version were associated with BanterAI. CarynAI 2.0 was presented as friendlier and less explicitly romantic, but users reportedly continued to push the bot toward sexual exchanges.
- Early 2024: Marjorie ended the later version, saying she no longer felt in control of the AI version of herself, according to subsequent reporting.
- May 2025: ABC News reported that she had shut down the AI and returned to traditional influencing. ABC News’ later account places the experiment in the broader growth of AI personas and creator marketing.
The sequence matters. The first product’s disappearance was not the end of the story: a later iteration did not remove the underlying difficulty of controlling an intimate AI persona. The outage also exposed a separate risk for customers—access depended on a startup’s service and infrastructure. When those fail, a paid relationship with a bot can end abruptly.
Can you rent CarynAI now?
There is no confirmed active CarynAI rental service or current $1-per-minute offer. The official CarynAI website remains online as a historical and promotional page, but a live website is not evidence of a working sign-up, payment flow or chat product. The price belongs to the 2023 launch; readers should not treat it as a current offer.
What this experiment reveals about creator AI
CarynAI’s commercial strength and its central risk came from the same feature: a real person’s identity made the chatbot more compelling than a generic companion. A licensed digital likeness can create a distinctive product, but permission to use a voice or persona does not automatically give the person practical control over every generated response.

Any creator considering a similar product—or user deciding whether to trust one—should look beyond the demo and ask:
- Who controls the persona? Can the creator review, restrict or revoke the likeness license, and what happens to the product if the relationship ends?
- What boundaries are enforceable? Are sexual content, harassment, threats and self-harm disclosures handled by clear rules and effective moderation, rather than by marketing promises?
- What happens to conversations? Is there a clear explanation of storage, human review, reuse, deletion and account closure—especially for sensitive personal disclosures?
- Who is responsible for continuity? Is there a plan for service shutdown, unused balances, refunds and user data if a vendor disappears or changes hands?
- Is the AI unmistakably disclosed? Users should be able to tell they are speaking to software, not the creator, and understand that the bot’s words are not necessarily the creator’s views or consent.
The evidence does not answer every one of those questions for CarynAI. They are the questions the product’s rise and shutdown make important to ask of any commercial AI built around a real person.
The documentary-sized lesson
CarynAI was more than a headline about an influencer charging for an AI girlfriend. It was an early, high-profile demonstration of how an online persona can be turned into a paid, scalable conversation—and how that intimacy can outrun the creator’s ability to control what the system says. The launch figures showed demand. The two shutdowns showed that attention, revenue and a recognizable likeness do not by themselves make a digital persona safe, controllable or durable.
