Ashley Park said she was hospitalized after an illness she described as tonsillitis during a holiday trip in December 2023 developed into “critical septic shock.” In a January 19, 2024 Instagram post, the actor said several organs were affected and described being taken by ambulance to three hospitals and spending a week in intensive care. Those details come from Park’s public account, as reported by ABC News; the cited reports do not include her medical records.
What Ashley Park said happened
Park wrote that “what started as tonsillitis spiraled into critical septic shock, which infected and affected several of my organs.” She said the illness began while she was on holiday in December 2023 and continued into New Year’s. Her account described ambulances, three hospitals, a week in the ICU, scans, tests, injections, severe pain and confusion. ABC News reported Park’s account on January 19, 2024.
The public reporting does not identify a specific pathogen, provide diagnoses for the organs she mentioned, or detail her treatment regimen. It is therefore most accurate to describe this as Park’s account of her illness, rather than as a case independently documented through medical records.
What septic shock means—and what it does not tell us about Park’s case
The CDC defines sepsis as “the body’s extreme response to an infection” and describes it as a life-threatening medical emergency. Almost any infection can lead to sepsis, but that general fact does not establish that tonsillitis commonly progresses to septic shock, nor does it provide additional medical details about Park’s diagnosis. CDC guidance on sepsis says people with possible sepsis should be evaluated and treated immediately.

CDC lists possible warning signs including a high heart rate or weak pulse, fever or feeling very cold, confusion, shortness of breath, extreme pain or discomfort, and clammy or sweaty skin. These signs do not let someone diagnose sepsis at home. If sepsis is suspected, seek urgent professional medical care.
What the CDC’s sepsis statistics mean
The CDC estimates that about 1.7 million U.S. adults develop sepsis each year. It also reports that at least 350,000 adults with sepsis die during hospitalization or are discharged to hospice. These are population-level figures for sepsis, not statistics specific to septic shock, tonsillitis, or Park’s individual prognosis. The CDC’s Sepsis Burden page was updated August 17, 2026.

Park’s recovery updates were reported in 2024
In a January 28, 2024 recovery update, Park said she was recovering. ABC News reported the next day that she was resting in Paris and awaiting medical clearance to return to work and begin filming season four of Emily in Paris. That is a report about her situation at that time; it does not establish her health status today. ABC News’ January 29, 2024 update covered her recovery.
Recovery from sepsis can take time, and the CDC advises working with a healthcare provider on safe activity and rehabilitation. Possible after-effects for some survivors include fatigue, weakness, pain, sleep problems, emotional distress or cognitive symptoms. These are general possibilities, not symptoms reported here as part of Park’s experience. CDC guidance on managing recovery from sepsis was updated September 25, 2025.
