Sixteen-year-old Alexander Martínez Gómez was killed by a municipal police officer in Acatlán de Pérez Figueroa, Oaxaca, on June 9, 2020. His death prompted grief and public demands for justice. Early accounts of the shooting conflicted; in 2021, Oaxaca’s human-rights ombudsman found that the killing involved arbitrary execution and illegal use of force. That administrative finding was not a criminal conviction, and the sources available here do not establish the case’s latest court outcome.
What happened to Alexander Martínez?
On June 9, 2020, a municipal police officer fired at a group of young people in Acatlán de Pérez Figueroa, a town in Oaxaca. Martínez, who was 16, was killed. Another teenager was wounded, according to contemporaneous Associated Press reporting. Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) also confirmed the date, location, victim’s age and police shooting in a statement issued at the time: CNDH statement.
Oaxaca state prosecutor Rubén Vasconcelos described the shooting to the Associated Press: “There was a shot directly at nine youths that were riding on motorcycles and since (Alexander) was at the front of the group of people with the frontal shot he died immediately.” His account was part of the initial investigation, not a final court finding. The Associated Press report also documented disagreement over how the shooting occurred.
Why did the killing spark outrage?
Conflicting early accounts
The local government said the shooting was not in bad faith. An officer told the Associated Press that the teenagers had failed to stop at a checkpoint. Vasconcelos said investigators did not accept the police account that the shooting was accidental. “There’s been talk of a lot of motives,” he told AP, adding: “The police talk about it being an accident … but we don’t believe that.” He also said possible tampering with the crime scene was under investigation. These were statements and investigative concerns reported at the time; they should not be mistaken for a final determination of criminal responsibility.

Grief in public
Hundreds of people attended Martínez’s funeral on June 11. AP reported shouts and signs demanding “justice.” His coffin was taken to a soccer field, where friends’ final ball rebounded into the goal—a poignant detail remembered in coverage of the funeral. His mother, Virginia Gómez, told AP: “I want my son and here he is, dead, with a shot to the head.” AP’s funeral coverage captured both the family’s grief and the community’s call for accountability.
The Guardian reported that demonstrations were planned and placed the anger over Martínez’s death amid increased scrutiny of police violence. The Guardian’s report described the wider context, while the public reaction documented in Acatlán was rooted in this specific killing and the disputed explanations that followed it.

What did Oaxaca’s human-rights ombudsman conclude?
In March 2021, the Human Rights Ombudsman of the People of Oaxaca (DDHPO) issued Recommendation 01/2021. It characterized Martínez’s death as an arbitrary execution and found illegal use of force. It also criticized the investigation, including failures involving the handling and chain of custody of evidence, and concluded that the investigation had not been serious, impartial and effective.
The recommendation called for reparations, a public acknowledgment and apology, controls over police weapons, and continuation of a serious, impartial and effective investigation. These are administrative human-rights findings and recommendations—not a criminal court verdict. What is known about the criminal case’s outcome?
The sources cited here do not establish the latest criminal court status, any appeal, or subsequent proceedings. The DDHPO’s finding that the killing constituted arbitrary execution and illegal use of force does not by itself establish that a particular person was convicted or acquitted in criminal court. Without a current, authoritative court record, the case’s final criminal disposition should be treated as unverified.
