Country singer Conner Smith was driving a pickup that struck Dorothy Dobbins, 77, in a marked Nashville crosswalk on June 8, 2025. Dobbins later died at a hospital. Police initially said failure to yield appeared to be a preliminary contributing factor, then issued Smith a misdemeanor citation. In February 2026, WSMV reported that the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the citation had been dropped at Dobbins’ family’s request. The withdrawal was not a court finding about how the collision happened.
What happened in the crash?
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said the collision happened the evening of June 8, 2025, on 3rd Avenue North near Van Buren Street in Nashville. In its June 9 preliminary account, the department said Dobbins appeared to be in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a Chevrolet Silverado driven by Smith, who was 24 at the time. She was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she died.
MNPD’s July 10 update said witnesses reported that Smith ran to Dobbins to render aid until Nashville Fire Department paramedics arrived. The Associated Press reported that Dobbins was a retired attorney and had been walking her dog, citing the Tennessee Bar Association.
What did police say about the cause?
In its June 9 release, MNPD described its assessment as preliminary: “The preliminary contributing factor for this crash appears to be Smith failing to yield the right of way to the pedestrian.” That was a police assessment during an ongoing investigation, not a judicial finding.

MNPD said Smith showed no signs of impairment and that there were no charges at that point while the investigation continued. In its July 10 update, the department said investigators found no evidence of impairment or distracted driving.
What happened to the citation?
- June 9, 2025: MNPD said no charges had been filed while its investigation continued.
- July 10, 2025: MNPD announced that its Traffic Division investigation resulted in Smith being issued a state misdemeanor citation for “Failure to Yield the Right of Way Resulting in Death,” a Class A misdemeanor.
- February 19, 2026: WSMV reported that a spokesperson for the Davidson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the citation was dropped at the request of Dobbins’ family.
The available reporting establishes that the citation was dropped, but does not establish a case-specific court ruling or explain why the family requested the withdrawal. Dropping the citation does not, by itself, mean Smith was convicted or acquitted, nor does it resolve the underlying facts as a judicial determination.
