Jimmy Kimmel reportedly said critics were on fair ground to call him a hypocrite over The Man Show, the Comedy Central series he hosted with Adam Carolla from 1999 to 2003. That concession is not the same as agreeing with every criticism, or as his separate 2020 apology for specific sketches and performances.
What did Kimmel say about the hypocrisy criticism?
In coverage of a 2025 Rolling Stone interview, AOL reported that Kimmel said it was “fair game” to call him out over The Man Show. The same report characterized his description of the show as tongue-in-cheek. The original interview exchange is not reproduced in the available coverage, so the safest reading is narrow: Kimmel acknowledged that the criticism was fair to raise, not that he accepted every charge as accurate.
AOL’s account of the reported interview is the basis for this characterization.
What was The Man Show?
The Man Show was a Comedy Central sketch-comedy series hosted by Kimmel and Adam Carolla. It aired from 1999 to 2003. Its title and comic framing presented it as a show about men; later discussion has focused on whether that framing excuses or sharpens criticism of its material.

How is the 2020 apology different?
In June 2020, renewed attention to Kimmel’s blackface impersonation of basketball player Karl Malone prompted him to apologize to people hurt or offended by his makeup or words. TV Guide reproduced his statement: “There is nothing more important to me than your respect, and I apologize to those who were genuinely hurt or offended by the makeup I wore or the words I spoke.” He also said, “Looking back, many of these sketches are embarrassing.”

That statement addressed the harm caused by particular makeup, words and sketches. It provides context for why his older comedy was criticized, but it should not be recast as an apology for every part of The Man Show or as the same statement as his reported response to the hypocrisy label.
