The footage did not establish that they were having an affair: that was speculation prompted by the moment and by a joke from frontman Chris Martin. Astronomer later confirmed their identities to the Associated Press, and the incident was followed by leadership changes at the company.
What the Coldplay concert video showed
On July 16, 2025, during a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the crowd camera showed a couple cuddling and smiling during a segment associated with Chris Martin’s “Jumbotron Song.” When they noticed they were on the screen, the woman turned away and covered her face, while the man ducked out of view.

Martin joked, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.” The line helped fuel online speculation, but neither the footage nor the joke proves an affair. The clip soon spread widely online. Associated Press reporting described the incident and the company’s later confirmation of the pair’s identities.
Who was in the video?
Astronomer confirmed to the Associated Press that the people shown were Andy Byron, then the company’s chief executive officer, and Kristin Cabot, then its chief people officer. Astronomer is a New York-based data company whose platform helps businesses organize data. The confirmed identities do not, on their own, establish the nature of the pair’s relationship.

Kristin Cabot
On July 25, 2025, ITV News reported that Cabot had resigned. ITV also reported Astronomer’s comment that public awareness of the company may have changed overnight while its work on data and artificial-intelligence problems continued. ITV News reported Cabot’s resignation.
Was the apology attributed to Byron real?
No. A purported apology circulated online under Byron’s name, but Astronomer’s senior vice president of marketing, Mark Wheeler, told Agence France-Presse that it came from a troll account and was fake. The company said Byron had not issued the statement. AFP’s July 18, 2025 fact check documented the false attribution.

The episode prompted discussion about how public event footage can be recorded, identified and rapidly circulated online. The Associated Press quoted Mary Angela Bock, an associate professor in the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Journalism and Media, saying: “It’s a little bit unsettling how easily we can be identified with biometrics, how our faces are online, how social media can track us — and how the internet has gone from being a place of interaction, to a gigantic surveillance system.”

AP also reported that Gillette Stadium’s privacy policy says visitors’ image, voice or likeness may be captured at the venue. That policy is relevant context, not a legal determination about this particular recording or its online distribution. The Associated Press reported on the privacy questions.
