What Happened in the Bradford 12 Case? A Clear Guide to the 1981 Trial and Acquittals

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bradford 12 were twelve South Asian youths arrested in Bradford in July 1981 after police discovered 38 homemade petrol bombs on waste ground near Horton Hall. The bombs had been prepared amid a rumour that a fascist march was planned, but the march did not take place and none of the bombs was used. At their trial at Leeds Crown Court in 1982, the defendants said they had acted in self-defence because they feared organised racist violence and believed the authorities would not protect Bradford’s Asian communities. All twelve were acquitted on 16 June 1982.

The acquittal became a landmark moment in British anti-racist history. Campaigners presented it as recognition of a community’s right to defend itself, but the available sources do not include the complete judgment or a full transcript. It is therefore more accurate to describe the case as a trial centred on self-defence and a politically important acquittal than to claim that it created a universal legal rule.

The case at a glance

Question What the available records establish
Who were the Bradford 12? Twelve South Asian youths, aged 17 to 25 when arrested, associated with the United Black Youth League (UBYL), described as a militant splinter group of the Asian Youth Movement Bradford.
Why were they arrested? Police found 38 homemade petrol bombs on waste ground near Horton Hall in Bradford on 11 July 1981.
Were the bombs used? No. The National Archives says the rumoured fascist march did not happen and the bombs went unused.
Where was the case heard? Leeds Crown Court. South Asian Britain dates the start of the trial to 26 April 1982.
What was the result? All twelve defendants were acquitted on 16 June 1982.
What was the central issue? The defendants’ claim that preparing the devices was an act of self-defence against feared racist attacks. Amnesty International also records arguments about the wording of the charges and the statutory meaning of “explosive substances.”

The dates and figures in this table come principally from the South Asian Britain Connecting Histories entry and The National Archives’ account. The sources use different descriptions of the proceedings, so an exact day-by-day trial length should not be inferred.

What happened in Bradford on 11 July 1981?

A rumour of a fascist march

The immediate background was a rumour that a fascist march was going to pass through Bradford. The available accounts do not establish that a march had been formally announced or that it was ever scheduled to occur. The National Archives records the crucial fact that the march did not take place. For the young people involved, however, the rumour was treated as a possible warning of organised violence against the town’s Asian population.

Bradford had an active Asian youth movement and a history of anti-racist organising. South Asian Britain identifies the United Black Youth League as a militant splinter group of the Asian Youth Movement Bradford. Members associated with the UBYL made the petrol bombs in the atmosphere created by the march rumour. That description identifies the group’s political setting; it does not mean that every member of the wider Asian Youth Movement took part or that all Bradford residents shared the same approach.

Making and hiding the petrol bombs

South Asian Britain reports that 38 petrol bombs were made and placed on waste ground near Horton Hall. The devices were homemade incendiary weapons. The records do not say that they were deployed, thrown or used to damage a person or building. Their discovery, rather than an attack carried out with them, triggered the arrests.

The arrests

Police arrested twelve South Asian youths, aged between 17 and 25, in connection with the cache. The number “Bradford 12” refers to those defendants, not to twelve people injured in an incident. The arrests turned a local preparation for possible confrontation into a major criminal case about how the law should treat a community that says it is preparing to protect itself.

Why did the defendants say they made the bombs?

Self-defence as the main explanation

Most of the defendants admitted taking part in making the devices, according to Amnesty International’s account of the proceedings. They pleaded not guilty while arguing that they had acted in self-defence. Their position was that they feared organised violent attacks against Bradford’s Asian community and believed defensive preparations were necessary because police protection could not be relied upon.

This was a claim about the circumstances in which the devices were prepared, not an assertion that petrol bombs are harmless or normally lawful. The defence sought to explain the defendants’ conduct through an imminent or anticipated threat and the absence of a dependable alternative. South Asian Britain describes the devices as a last-resort measure; that is the historical account’s framing of the defendants’ position, not a finding that every act of preparation for a feared attack is automatically protected by law.

A separate challenge to the charges

Amnesty International records a second line of defence. Lawyers argued that the charges had been formulated incorrectly because the petrol bombs did not fall within the statutory meaning of “explosive substances.” They also argued that the defendants did not intend to injure people or damage property. These arguments addressed the legal elements of the offences, while the self-defence argument addressed why the defendants said their conduct should not be treated as criminal in the circumstances.

The surviving source accounts do not reproduce the indictment, the precise statutory provisions, or the judge’s full directions to the jury. Readers should therefore avoid converting this argument into a definitive statement about how the relevant explosives law applies in every later case.

What happened at the Bradford 12 trial?

The case reached Leeds Crown Court

South Asian Britain dates the beginning of the trial at Leeds Crown Court to 26 April 1982. The case followed the July 1981 arrests by several months and placed the defendants’ account of community self-defence before a criminal court.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amnesty International says an observer attended parts of the trial in April, May and June. That wording is significant: it confirms observation across those months but does not provide a reliable single count of trial days. Accounts that describe the trial as lasting a particular number of days should be treated cautiously unless they cite a consistent court record.

What the jury had to consider

The proceedings brought together several questions:

  • Whether the defendants had participated in making the petrol bombs.
  • Whether the prosecution had proved the offences as charged, including the legal classification of the devices.
  • Whether the defendants had the required intention in relation to injury or damage.
  • Whether the circumstances described by the defendants supported their claim that the preparations were an act of self-defence.

The available accounts establish the defence arguments and the final acquittals, but they do not provide a complete transcript from which every submission, evidential ruling or jury direction can be reconstructed.

The acquittals on 16 June 1982

South Asian Britain gives 16 June 1982 as the date on which all twelve defendants were acquitted. The National Archives calls the outcome a “landmark trial” in which the Bradford 12 were eventually acquitted. An acquittal means the prosecution did not secure convictions on the charges before the court. It does not, by itself, disclose which parts of the defence the jury accepted or whether the verdict rested on one argument, several arguments, or reasonable doubt about the prosecution case.

Why were the Bradford 12 acquitted?

The most responsible answer is that the trial was centred on the defendants’ self-defence case and also included technical arguments about the charges. South Asian Britain presents the acquittal as resting on the idea that the petrol bombs were a last-resort form of self-defence. Amnesty International records both the self-defence plea and the challenge to the statutory classification and intent requirements. Those sources show what the defence argued and how the case was understood publicly.

They do not supply the complete judicial reasoning. No full trial transcript or judgment is included in the source set, and the case was tried before a jury. It is therefore not possible to state with confidence that the jury adopted one specific legal test or that the acquittal created a general precedent applicable to all community-defence cases.

The slogan “Self-Defence is No Offence” captured the campaign’s political message. It should be identified as a campaign slogan rather than quoted as the court’s wording or presented as a new rule of English criminal law.

What did the “Self-Defence is No Offence” campaign mean?

A community campaign around the prosecution

South Asian Britain describes the “Self-Defence is No Offence” campaign as arguing that South Asian communities had a right to defend themselves and as criticising West Yorkshire police. The campaign connected the Bradford case to wider concerns about racist attacks, public safety and whether the police were providing adequate protection.

The campaign did not simply ask the public to ignore the petrol bombs. It sought to place the defendants’ actions in the context of fear, racism and community organisation. Its argument was that judging the devices without considering the threat perceived by Bradford’s Asian residents would misunderstand why they were made.

Campaign organisation and later accounts

The Monitoring Group credits campaign coordination to Suresh Grover and says the campaign led to the acquittal. That is the organisation’s retrospective account and should be read as an attributed interpretation of the campaign’s role, not as a neutral finding in the court record. The trial result itself is separately documented by The National Archives and South Asian Britain.

Why is the case historically important?

It linked criminal law to anti-racist organising

The Bradford 12 case brought a question usually discussed in abstract legal terms—when can a person use force in self-defence—into a dispute about a whole community’s security. The defendants were not describing a private quarrel between two individuals. They said they were responding to a feared organised attack and to a belief that official protection was inadequate.

That framing made the case important to anti-racist activists. It connected the courtroom to street-level organising, local knowledge of racist violence and debates about policing. The acquittal became a reference point for people who believed that communities should not be required to remain passive while waiting for protection.

It became a symbol, not a simple legal formula

The National Archives labels the outcome a landmark trial. That description reflects the case’s historical importance, but it should not be confused with a published appellate precedent. The available materials do not establish that the acquittal changed the statutory definition of self-defence or authorised the manufacture of petrol bombs. Its lasting significance lies in the combination of the defendants’ arguments, the campaign surrounding the trial and the verdict’s symbolic meaning for anti-racist movements.

Who were the organisations involved?

The United Black Youth League

South Asian Britain identifies the UBYL as the group associated with making the devices and describes it as a militant splinter of the Asian Youth Movement Bradford. That description helps distinguish the defendants’ immediate organisation from the broader movement of Asian youth groups. It does not establish that every UBYL member was among the twelve defendants.

The Asian Youth Movement Bradford

The Asian Youth Movement Bradford was part of the local setting in which young South Asian activists organised against racism. The source material uses it to explain the UBYL’s relationship and the political environment around the case, rather than as a list of all people involved in the bomb-making.

West Yorkshire police

Police discovered the cache and arrested the twelve youths. The campaign criticised West Yorkshire police, particularly over the question of protection for Asian communities. The source set does not provide a full institutional history of policing in Bradford or a statistical comparison of reported attacks, so broader claims about police performance should not be inferred from this case alone.

What the case does—and does not—prove

Established by the available records

  • A cache of 38 homemade petrol bombs was found in Bradford.
  • The bombs were prepared amid a rumour of a fascist march.
  • The march did not take place and the bombs were not used.
  • Twelve South Asian youths were arrested and prosecuted.
  • The defence centred on self-defence, with additional arguments about the charges and intent.
  • All twelve were acquitted in June 1982.
  • The case became a major reference point for anti-racist community organising.

Not established by the source set

  • The precise wording of the indictment or the statutory sections charged.
  • The complete judicial directions or a written judgment explaining the verdict.
  • The exact number of trial days.
  • A universal rule that preparing or possessing petrol bombs is lawful when a person fears an attack.
  • A finding that the court formally endorsed the campaign slogan “Self-Defence is No Offence.”

Keeping these boundaries matters. The historical importance of the acquittal does not require claims that the surviving records cannot support.

Where can you study the Bradford 12 further?

The National Archives

The National Archives’ “Protest in the 20th century” material includes a 1982 Bradford 12 campaign poster, catalogued under reference HO 325/512. The poster is evidence of how the campaign presented the case publicly and is useful for studying the movement’s language and visual strategy.

The Tandana Archive

The University of Manchester’s Ahmed Iqbal Ullah RACE Centre catalogues the Tandana Archive collection of Bradford and Sheffield Asian Youth Movement papers. The collection covers 1977–1990, was collected by Anandi Ramamurthy and transferred to the centre in 2014. It can help place the trial within the longer history of Asian youth activism rather than treating the acquittal as an isolated courtroom event.

Contemporary campaign material and scholarship

South Asian Britain lists contemporary campaign materials and related scholarship, including work by Anandi Ramamurthy and Amrit Wilson. These materials are particularly useful for comparing the public campaign narrative with the narrower questions that a criminal trial had to decide.

A participant’s account

DarajaPress lists Rebellion: Self Defence and the Story of the Bradford 12 by Tariq Mehmood, who was one of the Bradford 12. The book is a participant’s fuller account and should be read as such: it offers a perspective from inside the case and its politics, complementing institutional archives rather than replacing them.

How to explain the Bradford 12 case accurately

A clear explanation should keep three layers separate. First are the documented events: the July 1981 discovery, the arrests, the Leeds trial and the June 1982 acquittals. Second are the defendants’ arguments: self-defence, the alleged lack of police protection, the challenge to the classification of the devices and the absence of an intention to injure or damage. Third are the political interpretations that followed, including the campaign’s claim that the verdict affirmed a community’s right to defend itself.

Those layers are connected but not interchangeable. The fact that the bombs were never used does not erase the seriousness of making them. The fact that the defendants were acquitted does not establish exactly which legal proposition the jury accepted. And the campaign’s historical significance does not depend on presenting its slogan as a judicial quotation. The enduring importance of the Bradford 12 lies in how a criminal prosecution became a national debate about racism, policing, collective safety and the limits of self-defence.
