Why did Chevy Chase and Bill Murray confront each other?
Chase had left the Saturday Night Live cast after its first season. Murray joined the cast, and Chase returned as host in 1978. Their later recollections offer different explanations for the confrontation, rather than one settled account of its cause.
Chase’s account: stories allegedly spread by Belushi
In the Live from New York oral history, Chase said John Belushi had told Murray “apocryphal stories” about him. Chase recalled that the clash took place just before he went on air. Read the oral-history excerpt in Vanity Fair.
Murray’s account: resentment over Chase leaving
Murray said cast members resented Chase for leaving the show and that he had been goaded into confronting him. That explanation differs from Chase’s account of Belushi’s alleged stories; the accounts do not establish a single, independently confirmed trigger.

Newman’s recollection: an exchange meant to wound
In a 2021 report about Laraine Newman’s appearance with Jane Curtin on Watch What Happens Live, Newman suggested the confrontation was incited by a pointed exchange in which each man knew what would hurt the other most. That is her later recollection, not a verified account that resolves the disagreement over how the incident began. Read the report on Newman’s recollection.
How physical was the backstage fight?
The descriptions range from a near-fight to a loud argument that appeared close to blows. In the oral history, Chase called it a “preliminary fistfight” that “never really came to fruition, but came close.” Murray later gave a less serious description, telling Empire in 2012: “It was really a Hollywood fight, a ‘Don’t touch my face!’ kind of thing.” Read Murray’s interview with Empire.

Director John Landis recalled a huge screaming fight in a hallway and said the men seemed about to come to blows. The accounts are not a consistent play-by-play, so the precise physical details remain a matter of recollection.
Who broke it up, and what was the atmosphere?
The accounts differ on who intervened. Murray said his brother, Brian Doyle-Murray, separated the men. Landis’s recollection names John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as the people who jumped in. These details should be understood as attributed memories, not a single agreed list of interveners.

Newman said she, Jane Curtin and Gilda Radner witnessed the incident. She described it as “very sad and painful and awful,” and recalled people going to their corners to avoid the tension. Her account conveys the effect on the room even as the participants’ descriptions of the clash itself differ.

In 2012, Murray said he and Chase were friends and that “It’s all fine.” The two also went on to work together on Caddyshack, as Parade reports.
