Federal, state and local agencies conducted a contraband sweep at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) from October 28 through November 1, 2024. The Bureau of Prisons said the operation was a facility-wide safety initiative—not a response to a particular threat. The Associated Press reported that it was not connected to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ detention, although he was being held at MDC at the time.
What happened at MDC Brooklyn?
The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) said the coordinated operation began on Monday, October 28, and concluded on Friday, November 1, 2024. Its stated purpose was to detect and remove contraband from the facility. BOP reported that agents identified and confiscated electronic devices, drugs and associated paraphernalia, and homemade weapons.

The agency’s November 1 announcement did not provide quantities or an itemized inventory. Neither the BOP release nor the cited AP coverage establishes how many items were seized.
Was the operation targeting Sean Combs?
No. Combs was detained at MDC in October 2024, which is why contemporaneous headlines associated the sweep with him. But the BOP characterized the work as a preplanned, coordinated facility-wide effort to support safety and security for people in custody and staff. It said: “This operation was part of a larger safety and security initiative and not in response to any particular threat or intelligence.”

The Associated Press reported that the sweep was not connected to Combs’ detention and that no criminal charges had been filed in connection with the operation. The fact that he was held at the jail does not establish that he was a target or subject of the sweep.
Which agencies took part?
The operation involved the BOP and the Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General, alongside federal, state and local agencies. The BOP listed:
Rank #2
- U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York
- Federal Bureau of Investigation
- Drug Enforcement Administration
- U.S. Customs and Border Protection
- New York State Police
- New York City Police Department
- New York Port Authority Police Department
- New Jersey Department of Corrections
- Suffolk County Police Department
- Nassau County Police Department
- Hudson County Sheriff’s Office
How does the sweep differ from Combs’ criminal case?
The jail operation and Combs’ federal prosecution were separate matters. In a September 17, 2024 announcement, the U.S. Department of Justice said Combs had been charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. Those were allegations at the time; the DOJ noted that an indictment is an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. The sweep’s reported contraband seizures do not establish anything about those charges.
For the disposition of Combs’ case, consult current court records rather than treating the 2024 charging announcement as an update.

Where was Combs later reported to be held?
On October 31, 2025, the Associated Press reported that Combs had been transferred from MDC to FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey to serve the remainder of his sentence. AP said the federal inmate database listed him there that Friday. That is a dated report, not confirmation of his location on October 7, 2026; a current Bureau of Prisons record would be needed to establish that.
