Only partly. On July 31, 2025, itch.io said it was reindexing free adult NSFW projects under a specific condition: creators had to select “No Payments.” The same update said paid content would return slowly as the platform continued discussions with payment processors. It did not announce a blanket restoration of paid adult games. As of October 7, 2026, the official sources cited here do not settle the current status of paid adult-game sales or discovery.
What changed on itch.io?
On July 24, 2025, itch.io said it had removed adult NSFW projects from public browse and search pages after payment processors raised concerns about some hosted content. The platform said it was auditing projects, might remove some pages permanently, and would require creators with NSFW pages to confirm compliance with the policies of the processors linked to their accounts. It also identified a campaign by Collective Shout about content on itch.io and Steam as part of the surrounding events. (itch.io’s July 24 update)
In a July 28 addendum, itch.io described itself as an open user-generated-content platform with more than 2 million product pages. It said tags alone were not reliable enough for a targeted review and warned that losing a payment partner could affect creators’ transactions or payouts. Those were the platform’s explanations; they are not an independent count of projects affected. (July 24 update and addendum)
On July 31, itch.io announced that free adult NSFW projects could be reindexed if their owners selected “No Payments” in the project’s Pricing settings. That was a limited route back into public discovery, not proof that paid adult projects had been restored. (July 31 reindexing update)

Did itch.io bring back NSFW games?
Itch.io said it was reindexing free adult NSFW content. “Deindexed” meant removed from public discovery channels such as search, browse and recommendations; it did not mean the project page was deleted or that its files became inaccessible. The July 31 update did not say paid adult projects had regained discovery or sales without restriction. (itch.io’s glossary and update)

Itch.io relayed Stripe’s position in the July 31 update: “Stripe is currently unable to support sexually explicit content due to restrictions placed on them by their banking partners, despite card networks generally supporting adult content (with the appropriate registrations). Stripe has indicated that they hope to be able to support adult content in the future.” This is a historical statement relayed by itch.io in 2025; it does not establish Stripe’s policy in October 2026. Nor does itch.io’s stated intention to talk with other processors establish that a new processor or paid-content pathway was later implemented. (July 31 update)

Does itch.io allow adult content?
Itch.io’s live Creator FAQ says legal fictional, illustrated and rendered adult content is generally allowed, while listing prohibited categories. It prohibits sexualized images or videos of real-life people, AI-generated imagery designed to resemble photographic content of real people, glorification of sexual violence, and sexual depictions of minors, people presented as minors, or suggested minors. It says violations leading to administrative action are permanent, with no chance of appeal, and funds in an account may not be eligible for payout. (Creator FAQ: “Is adult content allowed?”)
For projects sold on itch.io, the FAQ also requires creators to follow the acceptable-use policies of every payment processor their account uses. Its non-exhaustive list of prohibited themes includes non-consensual content; underage or “barely legal” themes; incest or pseudo-incest; bestiality or animal-related content; rape, coercion or force; sex-trafficking implications; revenge porn, voyeurism or hidden cameras; and certain bodily-waste or extreme-harm fetishes. Itch.io says it may assess issues individually and may refund or freeze pending transactions when terms have been violated. What should creators check before publishing?
Set the project’s adult classification accurately
Itch.io’s quality guidelines say projects with strong adult themes must be marked as adult. Repeated failure to respect adult classification can lead to removal from search and browse indexing. Correct classification supports eligibility for discovery; it does not guarantee that a paid project can use a particular processor or will be indexed. (Creator quality guidelines)
Check the payment route separately
Review the policies of every processor attached to the account as well as itch.io’s content rules. A project’s adult label does not establish payment eligibility. The 2025 updates and current FAQ cited here do not specify present-day platform-wide conditions for paid adult-project indexing and sales.

Use “No Payments” only if the project is meant to be free
For the July 31, 2025 free-content reindexing, itch.io directed page owners to the “No Payments” option under the project’s Pricing section in the Dashboard’s Edit Page. It warned that disabling payments could make individually priced files freely available. That instruction described the eligibility rule for the announced reindexing, not a confirmed current workflow for every adult project. (July 31 update)
Complete any required content-warning steps
The July 31 update said itch.io was implementing a content-warning system and that page owners would need to complete it to qualify for indexing. The announcement described a planned step; it does not by itself confirm how that workflow is configured today. Check the current project-editing interface and official guidance before relying on the 2025 instructions.

What is known about paid adult games today?
The sources establish the limited free-content reindexing announced in July 2025, itch.io’s published content rules, and the requirement that sold works comply with relevant processor policies. They do not establish whether itch.io later restored paid adult NSFW indexing or sales, or what exact current eligibility conditions apply. A May 15, 2026 secondary article used the headline “Indie Game Platform Itch.io Reopens the Door to Adult Content,” but it does not supply primary evidence of a separate 2026 policy reversal. For a current decision, look for a newer official itch.io announcement rather than treating “reopens the door” as proof that paid adult games are generally back.
