On December 28, 1991, a car driven by actor Phill Lewis collided head-on with a car driven by 21-year-old Isabel Duarte in Potomac, Maryland. Duarte died. In November 1992, a Montgomery County jury convicted Lewis of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated; the following January, he was sentenced to five years in prison, with all but one year suspended.
What happened on River Road?
The collision happened early on December 28, 1991, on River Road in Potomac. Contemporary reporting said Lewis’s car crossed the center line and struck Duarte’s car head-on. Duarte died at Suburban Hospital. The Washington Post’s initial report covered the crash and the police account.
Duarte was 21, a recent immigrant from Portugal who worked as a nanny, according to The Washington Post’s report on Lewis’s indictment. The available reporting does not establish further personal details about her life, so it is important not to turn her story into a backdrop to Lewis’s career.
What did the jury decide?
In November 1992, a Montgomery County jury found Lewis guilty of vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated, as reported by The Washington Post. The newspaper reported that a state police chemist testified at trial that Lewis’s blood-alcohol reading after the crash was .29 percent. That figure is a case-specific number attributed to trial testimony, not a general statistic.

Trial coverage also reported testimony from an emergency-room physician who said Lewis told him he had been driving and had been out drinking. That is a witness’s account as reported by the newspaper, not an independently verified direct statement from a court record. The verdict coverage records the jury’s decision.
Lewis’s father publicly maintained that his son was innocent and said the family would continue seeking evidence to overturn the verdicts, according to the same contemporary reporting. That was the family’s stated position; it does not change the jury’s convictions.

What sentence did Lewis receive?
In January 1993, Judge William C. Miller sentenced Lewis to five years in prison and suspended all but one year. The Washington Post reported that Lewis apologized to Duarte’s family at sentencing. Lewis said: “There are no words for the pain I go through every day.” The sentencing report attributes the statement to Lewis.
